Hi Tara,
My name is Marianne and I live in CA. Here is my experience with
Substitute Teaching.

Here, I only substitute for one district. I only substitute in Special
Education, where there are always Assistants. I do not schedule for the
same day. It takes me about 1.5 hours each way and I would like to be
there on time. Many districts, even in this "diverse, disabled friendly"
area do not let me substitute as they say they cannot provide the right
reasonable accommodations. Many times, they do not have Assistants in
special ed class rooms. So, I do not have too many good experiences. I
would be glad to talk to you off list.

If you send me an email I would be glad to provide my phone number or call
you back if you provide yours.

What state and area are you in? What is your transportation like?

Marianne

Subject: [nobe-l] Substitute Teaching

Hello all,

I was wondering if any of you have had any experience substitute teaching.
I'm considering getting my substitute teaching license, so I will be able to
get some additional teaching experience after I finish student teaching. My
university usually lets out a month before most elementary schools, so I was
thinking about subbing during that time while looking for jobs. Some of my
questions include:
1: how do you handle reading lesson plans and materials? My cooperating
teacher hand writes her notes for substitute teachers, so this would be
impossible for me to read.
2: how do you handle getting Transportation on such short notice?
3: what were some of the challenges you faced was substitute teaching, and
how did you resolve those issues?

Thanks,

Tara
