[NOBE-L] Screen readers during virtual learning

Hi Jasmin,

At the moment I use a really cheap old netbook for my speakers notes. Its ancient, it isn't even on the net, I think its running Jaws 11. So it is a laptop but I said laptop or notetaker because the point is it really could be anything that is capable of reading basic text files, so any kind of talking notetaker would probably do. . While I need to use powerpoint to present to my students, and videos from time to time, I believe in keeping the technology as simple and robust as it possibly can be for myself, so a small laptop that can't be interrupted by notifications or other messages on email or from the internet is just fine.

I would love to join your teachers' group on Whatsapp, please send me the details. I'm based in the UK and For quite a while I was heavily involved with an organisation here for blind and partially sighted teachers and students. Sadly we didn't have that many teachers, but it was always really interesting hearing their stories and sharing practice. I'm actually in HE myself, I teach Computer Science at the University of London. I think there is a lot of useful stuff to be learned from people sharing practice and experiences teaching across all different sectors.

Looking forward to joining.

Tony

Hi, Tony,

I love your setup! What do you use as a smaller Laptop or notetaker, just out of curiosity. I'm not sure if you were part of the list when I developed a group for teachers on Whatsapp, but it would be great if you could join us.

Sincerely,
Jasmine

Hi,

Really interesting to hear of you guys experiences.

I too use a Windows computer with Jaws, though I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work with Apple Voiceover just the same. I use zoom for virtual learning in university teaching. I use two pairs of earphones, just using one earpiece from each pair. In one ear I listen to the laptop I am using to give the class, so I can hear jaws with my slides on screen share or for looking at chat messages students use to ask questions during class. With this set up students can't hear the screen reader. In the other ear I have an earpiece from the other earphones which I connect to a smaller laptop or notetaker which has my speakers notes. Some of my classes are quite big, 50+, so a real bonus with this set up is that I know who is in the class and who is asking questions. I would really like to keep this way of knowing who is doing what when face to face teaching starts again. Another advantage which I haven't explored is the polling mechanism on zoom. This might need a bit of set up beforehand, but should make it possible to have quick quizzes or opinion polls during the class.

All best wishes,

Tony

Hi there,
I use a Windows computer. When I am on Zoom, I have the voices of the kids coming through my main computer speakers and Jaws coming through my earbud. I have found that this works really well.

Do you have the computers set so that your students can’t hear your reader of choice or do you tell your students you have it? I am asking because when I’m on zoom I can have it set that way. However, my current placement are using blackboard collaborate ultra and I was told that when my microphone is on they can hear voiceover. I want to see if there is a way for the kids not to hear voiceover when I’m not muted and am teaching. Is this possible with voiceover on a mac or is that better done on a windows with jaws?
