Hello, Robert.
I am writing with great interest in the STEM Storytelling through Podcasts for Sighted, Blind, and Visually Impaired Students NSF project. My background includes 14 years teaching elementary education at a STEM magnet school where I taught 1st, 4th, and 5th general education, as well as served as a special education teacher, and as a teacher of the visually impaired. In 2021, I earned my PhD. in special education, teacher preparation. During my doctoral program, I was selected as an NSF CADRE fellow, in part, because of my research focusing on increasing equitable participatory access to STEM education for students with disabilities. Currently, I am a professor at the University of Kentucky, where I prepare new teachers of the visually impaired. In this role, I engage with many educators, across multiple states who are either preparing to become teachers of the visually impaired, as well as many who are already working in the field.
I definitely plan to apply to be part of the teacher advisory board. However, if there are additional aspects of the project where I contribute on a deeper level, I would welcome the opportunity. I am I believe my education, and classroom experience, combined with my lived experiences as a blind individual, could support the team's efforts to broaden participation for blind and visually impaired and sighted upper-elementary students through engaging with podcast technology to tell stories about scientists, including those who are Blind and Visually Impaired. Thank you for your efforts to bring STEM content to all students. I look forward to learning more about this exciting project in the near future.
Sincerely,
Amanda Lannan, Ph.D., TVI
