Hi all,
The notes from our Education Committee call are below. Sorry for the delay in sending these out.

Notes from the Oagdu Education committee call on May 5th, 2015

1. In preparation for the call, Aleeha Dudley sent out the PowerPoint documents via our email list. We read through these documents on our own and discussed them during the call.

2. The following people were on the call: Aleeha Dudley, Deanna Lewis, Annette Anderson, Debbie Baker, TJ Meloy, LuAnn Bowers, and Abby Bolling.

3. Aleeha thinks that the best possible way to share information is via a Dropbox folder. If anyone needs help signing up for Dropbox, please contact Aleeha.

4. We first discussed Document one, the wording to go along with the PowerPoint pictures; however, there are no pictures at this time. Here are some things we discussed regarding this document:

A. We would like to broaden the audience of those who will view our finished presentation. Right now, it is geared towards police officers, but we would like it to include firemen and other first responders. That way they will better understand what to do when a patient has a service dog.

B. As it is now, service dogs are hardly mentioned in the Powerpoint, so we would like to include more specifics on guide and service dogs.

C. Adding more details about different types of corrections, like the high collar or with a dog wearing a prong collar.

D. Mentioning the legislative penalties and other terms for denial of access. For example: Religion and allergies are not legal excuses for denying a service dog user access to riding in a cab or visiting a store.

E. Demonstrating proper etiquette when meeting a blind person. Such as not grabbing the person, the dog's harness, or their cane. Also, not directing the dog, but giving the directions to the handler.

5. Adding photos and videos. These need to be high quality and if taken on a camera phone, an iPhone 5 or better. Pictures should be sent to Aleeha or placed in the Dropbox folder.
We'd like photos or videos of:

A. The different types of corrections

B. Different collars and harness styles

C. People working with their dog and/or cane

D. Different tools used in guide work, such as a gentle leader and the chest pads that Pilot uses.

6. Some things that we would like to change slightly with the first document are:

A. Re-wording the description of having the blind person feel the officer's hat. Maybe change it to feeling their badge.

B. Changing the wording around with the statement, "Most blind people have some vision". Perhaps change it to, "some blind people have usable vision".

C. Changing the misspelling in slide 8. Right now, it says "aural commands", it should say "oral commands".

D. Better describing a correction.

7. The second document only needs a few tweaks. We should include other phrases besides, "pfui, "such as, "no, "and "leave it".

8. We would like to have Barbara Pierce and Marion Gwizdala look over our finished presentation to review it. We would like to give presentations throughout the state, especially in larger cities like Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Cleveland. We can also get a recording of us doing the presentation and post it on the internet.

9. We will have another call in about 2-3 weeks.
