Winning the Battle
One of the greatest spiritual battles you will face is self-control and yet it is one that every Christian must win. The Bible lists self-control as one of the fruits of the spirit. In Galatians 5:22-23, “By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.” It’s easy to get along with people who are nice to you, but the minute they step on a nerve, you have a decision to make. You can choose to stay calm and respond in a Christlike way or you can get angry and verbally defend your point of view. If you choose to react by throwing fiery verbal darts, at the moment those words leave your mouth, you officially surrender your power to the very one who attacked you, thus allowing them to control your emotions. The Bible says in Proverbs 25:28, “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self control.” It takes strength from God to achieve “self-control,” and you gain the victory by claiming Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Don’t allow your emotions to be controlled by others. Strive to reach the point where your mood doesn’t shift based on the insignificant actions of someone else. 1 Peter 4:7 tells us, “The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.” When the devil tries to push your buttons, remain calm and of sober mind, and let God fight your battles! Text: Proverbs 16:32, Titus 2:11-12, 2 Timothy 1:7, James 1:19-20
Bible Texts:
Proverbs 16:32 NKJV - He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
Titus 2:11-12 NKJV - For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.
2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV - For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
James 1:19-20 NKJV - So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
