Just Be Kind
So many people today are out for number one. They fight for the best parking space, push to the head of the line, and tromp on anyone in the way just to get what they want. There seems to be no regard for anyone but themselves. It’s become almost an acceptable and justifiable way to act. Christians have the same problem. They fight in church board meetings to defend their point of view and get angry if their fellow members don’t agree. Sometimes something as trivial as choosing the color of new carpet for the sanctuary has created such dissension that entire churches were split down the middle–neither side speaking to the other! Oh, how sad that must make our heavenly Father. How we treat others speaks volumes about who we are not only as human beings but also as followers of Christ. When Jesus was here on earth, He lived a life of humility, always thinking of others. He was gentle, kind, and loving even to those who mistreated Him, gossiped about Him, and persecuted Him. He was so loving that little children flocked around Him–just wanting to be close. This world is filled with people who are hurting, lonely, struggling financially, or at the end of their rope with nowhere to turn. Many suffer in silence; in fact, chances are you had no idea that the person you were talking to today was someone who was trying their best to just keep it together and not fall apart. You would be more compassionate towards the grouchy cashier if you knew she had just lost her husband and was working three jobs to support her children, or the angry man who screamed at you to keep the line moving was dying of cancer and his wife just left him. There are a million reasons to be kind, but here is the most important one: because God wants you to! The next time you meet someone who is stepping on your last nerve and you’re tempted to make a sarcastic remark or give a dirty look, instead, choose to be like Jesus–just be kind!
