Backsliders
One of the biggest reasons people become “backsliders” and stop going to church is because of jealousy, criticism, and judgment. Someone doesn’t like the way you dress, or they think you’re too bossy, loud, or just don’t like your personality. Perhaps they are jealous that they weren’t nominated for the church office you hold or they lack the musical talent that God gave you. Maybe they don’t like the preacher and can’t stop themselves from tearing him apart. Snippy comments and gossip ignite hard feelings between members and before you know it, the church becomes divided and many just stop attending all together. But here is how the devil gets you. When you quit going to church, the longer you stay away, the harder it is to come back. Satan wants you to stay away, so he will give every excuse to stay home. But don’t allow anyone or anything to separate you from your Heavenly Father. Churches are made up of imperfect people, so if you’re looking for the “perfect” church, you’ll never find it. And staying home isn’t the answer either, because before long, worldly distractions will entice you to cut God out of your life completely. The devil doesn’t care how he separates you from Jesus–just as long as he does! But God wants you to worship Him together with fellow believers. The Bible says in Hebrews 10:24-25, “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another . . .” If you are a “backslider,” pray for strength and courage to take that first step back, and each week will get easier and easier. Don’t worry about who is watching you or what people will say. That’s not why you’re there. If people are rude to you, they reveal who they are, not who you are, so don’t take it personally. You can claim God’s promise in Psalm 91:14-16, “The Lord says, ‘I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.’ ” If you are a faithful member who sees a “backslider” walk through the church doors, get out of your seat, walk over, and warmly welcome them home! Text: Galatians 1:10, Romans 14:13, 1 Corinthians 8:9, Proverbs 24:16

Bible Texts:
Galatians 1:10 NKJV - For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

Romans 14:13 NKJV - Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way.

1 Corinthians 8:9 NKJV - But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.

Proverbs 24:16 NKJV - For a righteous man may fall seven times And rise again, But the wicked shall fall by calamity.
