Watch this quick message from Dr. Brian Evans

2 Peter 3:18 (KJV) But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

As a pastor, one of the things I must constantly remind myself of is to keep growing as a Christian myself. As we strive to help others to be continually growing in their faith, we need to be sure we keep growing.

It is a shame when one of our people grows in their faith to a certain level and stops, they get stuck. It is even more of a shame if a pastor or any other Christian leader stops growing. It is unlikely a leader can help others to grow beyond where they are in their own faith. If you and I do not keep growing as Christians, those we lead who do keep growing will eventually outgrow us, and they will likely leave us.

Why would God leave someone under the leadership of a leader from whom they can learn little because they stopped growing?

Some pastors and other leaders are like a salesman I once managed who was failing but very proud of his 30 years of sales experience. He was doing so poorly, I eventually had to fire him, which led to his making an angry outburst towards me.

He told me he had 30 years of experience, much more than I did, and did not need my help to succeed. I told him it seemed to me he actually did not have 30 years of experience, but 1-year of experience 30 times. This man had stopped growing as a salesman and was failing because of it.

If a pastor or any other Christian leader stops growing in their faith, they are going to struggle to lead effectively over the long haul. We must do all the things we tell our people to do, reading, praying, etc., on a personal level, not just to prepare sermons and lessons.

In other words, we have to be good Christians, as we teach others how to be good Christians.

God Bless,
Dr. Brian Evans, Asst. to the President
