Subject: ATM Testing Project
Dear Dr. Smith,
I am working with Ron Gardner on the Cardtronics ATM Testing Project. Thank you for your willingness to participate in the ATM Testing Project. We have been requested to test eight ATM machines located within your state affiliate. Attached you will find a list of 20 ATM machines from which you can choose the required number to test. The attached document is an excel spreadsheet, and the name of the city in which each ATM is located is listed in column E. Please identify and send me the name and e-mail address of each individual in your affiliate who will be testing these machines in their geographic area.
Important Instructions: The instructions on testing the ATM machine and filing the test report are found below. Forward this e-mail which includes instructions for testing the machines along to them and ask them to e-mail me with a list of the machines they will be testing so we can ensure that we do not duplicate machines being tested. If you have questions, you can e-mail Ron Gardner at rgardner at nfb.org or reply to this e-mail at ATM.testing at gmail.com.
Following are the general instructions from Ron Gardner regarding the National Federation of the Blind ATM testing project:
National Federation of the Blind ATM Testing Project
Welcome to the Cardtronics ATM Testing Project. Note: This is a general email providing instructions to all ATM testers. The purpose of this project is to test the voice guidance accessibility of at least 135 Cardtronics ATM machines across the country. You have been identified by your state affiliate president as an individual who is willing to test one or more ATM machines and fill out a web-based form and submit it on line. If you are willing to locate and test a particular ATM machine in your area and answer ten yes/no questions and submit your answers on an online form, please continue reading these instructions.
What ATM machines are being tested:
There are thousands of Cardtronics ATM machines in the United States. Attached you will find information about specific ATM machines located in your area. This attachment contains the serial number, location, and address for the ATM machines that are available for you to test in your area. The questionnaire you will fill out online after you have tested the ATM machine will require you to record this specific information into the questionnaire. (See below)
Dr. Maurer has authorized the payment of $100 per Cardtronics ATM machine tested. That is, if the ATM machine is tested and the online form is submitted properly, $100 will be sent to the affiliate in which the ATM machine is located. The affiliate president is encouraged to share this $100 payment with the individual who actually conducts the ATM test and submits the report. The purpose of sharing the $100 payment is to help offset expenses incurred by the ATM tester. This $100 per machine payment is limited to the first 135 online reports received from across the country. ATM testers are encouraged to conduct the test and submit the online form as soon as possible so as to be among the first 135 online reports which are received. The Web site will track the order in which the forms are received. I will notify all presidents when no more tests are needed or when the required number of tests are received so as not to incur unnecessary effort.
People to contact:
Ron Gardner is coordinating this ATM Testing Project. If you have questions or problems during any part of the ATM test process, please contact the ATM test coordinator by either replying to this email or sending a separate email to atm.testing at gmail.com Emails you receive for this project should be identifiable in two ways. The email will come from ATM Testing Coordinator and all emails should have the words "ATM Testing Project" in the subject line.
Before leaving to test a machine:
Before leaving to test an ATM machine, you must review this email with specific instructions about testing the ATM machines in your area and the attached list of machines with their exact location and serial number. Remember, we are only testing Cardtronics ATM machines. This list contains locations for only those machines which have been reported as currently accessible.
You will need to have a pair of standard headphones or earbuds and an ATM card or check card. In order to test the machine you will also have to have your Personal Identification Number (PIN). It is strongly recommended that you take notes about the machine being tested to facilitate accurate answers on the questionnaire.
You will also need to review the questions you will be asked regarding the machine. You can find these questions by logging on to www.nfb.org/atmtest You will go to this same website and fill out this same form after conducting the test.
After locating the ATM machine:
Determine whether there are tactile icon images which help to locate items such as headphone jack, keypad, and cash dispenser. Plug your headphones in and follow the instructions. You should be given instructions as to how to insert your ATM or debit card. For example, you should be told whether the card is vertical with raised numbers on the left or horizontal with raised numbers up. Be sure to notice whether the voice guided instructions match the actual layout of this machine.
You should be given the location of the “enter” key, the “back” key, and the “cancel” or “end transaction” key. You will be asked to enter your PIN followed by the enter key. The voice guidance should not repeat the numbers you enter. This helps prevent unauthorized disclosure of your PIN.
It is important that you test the following three functions:
1. Are you able to check the balance in your checking and/or savings account?
2. Are you able to transfer funds and verify the amount being transferred between accounts? For example, $25.15 transferred from checking to savings. Did the voice guidance system verify the amount you entered to be transferred?
3. Cash withdrawal (you will be charged a small ATM fee for a cash withdrawal). Does the voice guidance system ask you to confirm the acceptance of the fee?
It is important that you test the cash withdrawal function by entering in a specific dollar amount to be withdrawn. For example, $20, $40, etc. Were you able to determine the amount of cash to be withdrawn? For example, did the voice guidance system verify that you entered $20.00 as opposed to $.20 or $2.00?
After the ATM test:
As soon after the ATM test as possible, go online to www.nfb.org/atmtest You can hit the link that says “Skip to main content this page”. You will need to fill out the personal information requested. Your state and date of test options are drop down choices.
After entering the test date, you will be asked to enter the ATM identification information. It is very important that you enter the specific information you received in the attachment to this email. This attachment contains the serial number, location, and address of one or more ATM machines in your area. We strongly recommend that you copy and paste the specific ATM information from this list into this box on the ATM test questionnaire form. Caution: You should only copy and paste the information for one machine per questionnaire. If you test more than one machine, you will need to copy and paste the information into another questionnaire for each ATM machine tested.
Next, mark either yes or no on each question. You may need to tab forward and backward a couple of times to make sure you are marking your yes/no answer correctly.
Question 11 is an edit box. You can enter comments about this specific ATM machine in this box if you desire. After verifying that all information on the form is correct, hit the “submit” button. You should receive an automated response indicating that your ATM test questionnaire was received.
Conclusion:
Again, if you have questions, contact the ATM testing coordinator at atm.testing at gmail.com or Ron Gardner directly at rgardner at nfb.org.
Thank you for participating in the Cardtronics ATM testing project. Your efforts will help the National Federation of the Blind continue to ensure better access for all blind Americans.
