Subject: Training medical students at OSU -- please help!
Greetings, Dr. J. Webster Smith!
My name is Ann Witte, and I am a program assistant for a new program within
the Nisonger Center in OSU's Medical Center. Here is a little info about
the effort of our program: we are recruiting people with disabilities to
help medical students feel more comfortable with patients who have
disabilities and, we hope, provide better care.
The OSU medical school is revising the entire 4 year undergraduate medical
curriculum, and we want to make sure that the treatment of patients with
disabilities is adequately addressed. We are trying to build an army of
volunteers with disabilities to convince the medical school that there are
people with disabilities in the community who are ready and willing to help.
While we do not know what activities the curriculum revision will contain,
we would like to see both formal and informal opportunities for students to
talk with people with disabilities.
We are hoping to make contacts with facilities and locations at which people
with disabilities spend a lot of their time and to which these medical
students could visit. Please contact me if this is something in which the
National Federation of the Blind of Ohio may have interest, and redirect me
to the appropriate contact if you would like me to contact a specific
program within your organization.
We appreciate your work and dedication, and I really hope to hear from you
soon. Thanks for your time!
Sincerely,
Ann Witte
