Dear Dr. J.W. Smith, President of NFB of Ohio,

NFB National has recently sent out information about an article on Improving
Sleep and Alertness in the Blind recently published in the Matilda Ziegler
Magazine for the Blind. A little over a year ago, we launched a clinical
study to evaluate a potential treatment for Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder.
Non-24 is a chronic sleep disorder that affects approximately 50% of
individuals who are totally blind. Their inability to perceive light causes
a severe disruption of the 24-hour sleep-wake pattern causing cyclical bouts
of nighttime sleeplessness and excessive daytime fatigue and napping. The
disorder can make it extremely difficult to do well in school, hold down a
job or have satisfying relationships. Non-24 has been called an "invisible
disability," and can go undiagnosed for years.

Recently, our 24SleepWake website has launched an exclusive new audio
series, "Meet the Experts: Sleep Disorders in the Blind." This 3 part series
features interviews with leading sleep experts and covers all aspects of
Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder, including its impact on the blind
community. The two that have been released are linked below.

The enrollment deadline for our clinical research study is forthcoming.
Without enough patients in the study, it will be difficult to develop a
treatment for this severe condition. Vanda appreciates any assistance you
can give in spreading awareness about Non-24. For every person who completes
our sleep survey, Vanda will donate $25. Thus far, we have been able to
donate more than $ 8,000 to the NFB national and local NFB chapters. See
below the announcement about this survey and our study.

Annie Gallagher

Announcement:

Do you ever feel like your sleep patterns are different than the rest of the
world? If you are totally blind, this could be due to a real sleep problem
related to the lack of light needed by your body's internal clock. If you
think you might be affected, you can call 1-888-389-7033 or email
<mailto:info at non24registry.com> info at non24registry.com to take a sleep
