Budget

The Conference Committee re-instated the percentage increase on case service
dollars to the introduced amount. These dollars will go solely for case
services and monitoring. This was done in an effort to ensure that those who
are most significantly disabled receive the services they so desperately
need. My thanks to Nick Blazer, Legislative Liaison and Marc Protsman,
Chief Financial Officer, for their efforts during the budget process.

Meeting with Portsmouth Staff

We conducted an Executive Team Meeting in Portsmouth on Monday to kick-off
this week. Getting out to our regional offices around the state offers us an
unparalleled opportunity to get feedback from our staff as they confront
issues and problems that are unique to their region. This helps us as an
executive team design solutions to give our staff the tools necessary to
best assist people with disabilities. I want to thank our hard-working staff
in Portsmouth for hosting us and providing exceptional information that will
only help strengthen the services we provide.

The Counseling Center Inc.'s Second Chance Center

Monday was also an exciting day because I had the honor of joining the Ohio
Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Director Orman Hall, Jay
Hash, Program Director and Ed Hughes, Executive Director of the Counseling
Center, Inc., as well as other Scioto County leaders at the ribbon cutting
ceremony on The Counseling Center Inc.'s Second Chance Center-which is going
to be a huge part of our Recovery to Work program. This innovative center
will work with about 40 people on a full-time basis and will assist these
individuals with job training, resume building skills and drug
rehabilitation. It was inspiring to listen to recovering addicts who have
worked through The Counseling Center previously and are now employed in
large part because of the tremendous work that the Center does. When you
have a moment, please follow the link and read about the ribbon-cutting
ceremony in the Portsmouth Daily Times.

Cafe Conversations Come to Campus View

This week RSC hosted the first two employee Café Conversations with great
success. There was energetic discussion surrounding the question of renaming
RSC. Check out the word cloud below and see what your colleagues are talking
about. If you would like to add your thoughts and ideas, here is the link to
sign up for the next Café Conversations.

Department of Administrative Services

I met with the Department of Administrative Services Director, Robert Blair,
this week to discuss additional ideas that RSC could explore to further
reduce overhead and administrative costs. If we can find additional ways to
cut our costs by utilizing shared services programs with other state
agencies, we will be able to drive more resources to the most important
people-Ohioans with disabilities.

Project SEARCH-Cincinnati

Director John Martin, of the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities
joined me on the road to visit the Project SEARCH Program in Cincinnati. We
were able to see how this program is helping students with disabilities gain
real-world skills that will lead to sustaining careers and independent
living opportunities.
