Subject: [NFBAffiliatePresidents] FW: Meet the Blind Month Update

The following Meet the Blind Month announcement comes from Melissa
Kobelinski.

========================

Good afternoon Federationists!

It has been an exciting time leading up to Meet the Blind Month. Already, we
have several states with events listed on the
calendar<http://www.nfb.org/nfb/Meet_the_Blind_Month_Events.asp?SnID=1081687
123>. The participating states are listed below in alphabetical order with
the number of events taking place within the state:

Arizona - One event
Delaware - One event
Iowa - Six events
Kentucky - Two events
Maryland - One event
Mississippi - Four events
Nevada - One event
Pennsylvania - Two events
Texas - One event
Virginia - Ten events
Washington - One event

If you would like to have your event posted on the calendar, please fill out
the attached event form and e-mail it to
mkobelinski at nfb.org<mailto:mkobelinski at nfb.org>. We should strive to have an
event in every state! Meet the Blind Month is our time more than ever to
come together as a Federation family and show our communities that we, the
NFB exist and are here to stay! It is our time to help educate others about
blindness and break misconceptions. It is our time to show those who are
blind and do not know the Federation that there are alternative ways of
doing everything they believe they can no longer do. It is our time!

Reminders and Information:

 * Please remember to try to place material orders a month in advance. If
your event is less than two weeks away and you need materials, please call
Melissa Kobelinski at (410) 659-9314 extension 2423.
 * Starbucks now has a gift card that contains Braille. This is a great
opportunity for us to connect with Starbucks on a local level. Contact the
Starbucks in your community and tell them about Meet the Blind Month. Talk
about how your affiliate or chapter can collaborate with Starbucks during
the month of October. Suggest providing them information that customers can
pick up during their visit to Starbucks or request a coffee donation for one
of your events. Ask about other oportunities that are available.
 * All events submitted will be considered for the Meet the Blind Month
challenge. In order for your event to qualiffy and be voted upon, it must
have additional components to it other than a table displaying information
(tabling), literature hand out, and/or school presentations. This means
thinking outside the box to engage students during your visit to the school
or during a tabling. The challenge is to create an event that enhances
positive awareness of the NFB in an out-of-the-box way. If you are planning
on tabling or presenting at a school, think about what else you can do to
get the crowed interested and engaged. If you would like to know whether
your event quallifies for the challenge, please e-mail Melissa Kobelinski at
mkobelinski at nfb.org<mailto:mkobelinski at nfb.org>. Remember, all events are
great as long as they serve the purpose of the campaign. The more positive
awareness we raise, the better!
 * The chapter or affiliate and the state with the most events will be
anounced at the end of the campaign for bragging rights! Right now Virginia
is in the lead, closely followed by Iowa. The Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the
Blind in collaboration with the NFB of Virginia is currently in the lead
with a total of nine events in Virginia. However, the Des Moines chapter is
hot on their trail with six events in their state of Iowa! Anyone care to
challenge them? Georgia? Maine? New York?
Keep up the great work and keep those events pouring in!
