[Ohio-talk] goodwill protest

The great thing about this informational picket was that it did not take or
need a lot of people. It was not confrontational because we were standing on
the public sidewalk, and Goodwill had nothing to say about whether or not we
were allowed to be in the area. These demonstrations build friendships and
commitment to our cause--in this case the injustice of disabled people's
receiving a pittence and calling it a job or job training. Those who did not
answer the call missed a great experience.

I want to thank those chapters that participated Saturday. Going into the
day, I thought we would have five demonstrations. As it turns out, we only
had three. I understand that we had one chapter cancel because their wasn't
enough interest on the part of the membership. Columbus did it with three
members, and Lorain with right around that number. It is my understanding
that one chapterthat was scheduled to participate actually asked the
Goodwill location for permission, and to kno one's surprise Goodwill said
no!!

Why other chapters decided not to participate at all is perplexing to me,
but when the National organization asks us to participate in an effort such
as this, we can not view the call to action as a plate of cookies from which
we can decide to partake or not. Our willingness to unite and take conserted
action has made us the strong organization we are today.

We picketed the Elyria store. The manager at the Drugmart next door asked us
to stay on the Goodwill side. But his customers read our signs anyway and
took our leaflets when they came our way. We decided that the results were
worth our effort. We engaged a number of folks in discussion. The level of
incomprehension was pretty great, and some people went away thinking badly
of Goodwill but still of the opinion that sheltered workers who produce at
half the rate of compepitive workers should reasonably receive half the
minimum wage. I did not feel that we could go into mismatched skills, falty
equipment, and poor material delivery complicate the issue. But we did
spread the word. I think Goodwill must have instructed employees not to
engage with us. At least no one ever came out to talk.

Good afternoon,
The Cuyahoga and cleveland chapters met at the Goodwill store in
Cleveland. We had a really good response with the people we spoke with.
Most of them were shocked that the practice of subminimum wage payments was
being practiced with companies like goodwill. Hopefully we opened a lot of
eyes today. I'm curious how the rest of the state chapters did.

            Thank you Jerry
