[Ohio-talk] Ohio-talk Digest, Vol 61, Issue 9

Hi all -

Forgive my ignorance, but I am very new to all of this.  I have sold several raffle tickets and continue to work on the effort.  When I have sold them, where do I send the stubs and the money I have collected?  Also, when do they have to be returned?

Thank You
Sue Driscoll
Lake County President

I think it would be good for me to qry to send out another mailing and see what happens.

Hello all, Yes! this has me so excited! I love to read and discuss
books, I facillitate a discussion group at Cleveland Sight Center and
we have had some very interesting discussions, we have hosted some
local authors and gone in small groups to lectures by other writers.
Recently I took part in a city wide discussion, The New Jim Crow by
Michelle alexander, it was really enlightening. It would be a real
asset if the Buckeye Bulletin could have a book corner and some of us
take turns with reviews and reccomendations.
Thank you JW for this info and it is good to hear from you. Stay
healthy and happy.

I would always be happy to consider book reviews from readers who would be
interested in doing them. My experience has been that, when push comes to
shove, people are too busy to meet deadlines. I would be thrilled to have
this offer be the exception that proves the rule.

National Federation of the Blind of Ohio
Buckeye Update, March 8, 2013

Last night I completed my first president's column for the
newsletter. Barbara has received some material for publication, but even
without asking her I'm sure she can use more. Let her know what you're doing
in your chapters and divisions. Please don't just assume that because you
have put something on Ohio Talk that we are going to pick it up for the
newsletter automatically.
Tuesday morning I attended the self advocacy and legislative day
sponsored by the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council. They had some
impressive presenters including members of the General Assembly.
Later that day I participated in a meeting of the advisory body for
the OSU teacher preparation program. It is clear that we have a lot to do in
the field of education for blind children. Last night I posted to Ohio talk
a set of comments that I hope you will all use as talking points and let the
Ohio Department of Education know that you do not support proposed changes
to standards concerning who is eligible to receive services from a certified
teacher of the blind and visually impaired. Because I circulated them just
last night, I am not going to include them here.
I also sent out the flyer that we are using to recruit students for
the BELL Program. Please do what you can to help us recruit. Barbara has
been working with the library for the blind to get letters out to registered
blind children.
It has come to my attention that at least one person has said we are
not doing enough to let members know what is happening with BELL. I have had
something about BELL in almost every update I have written. I have done what
I can to include those who have specifically said they want to help with
BELL.  Keep in mind that the program is only in Columbus this year. We want
to expand to other cities next year. I welcome good Braille users who want
to help and can find a place to stay in Columbus during the two weeks of the
program.
Please be sure you are doing what you can to encourage people in
your chapters and divisions to sign up for Ohio Talk. This is an easy way to
disseminate information. Also please be sure you are doing what you can to
share information with those who are not on the listserv for whatever
reason.
Yesterday Shelbi and I attended an event sponsored by the Ohio Department of
Transportation. We tested several ADA compliant barriers designating
construction zones. As the word spreads about the availability of these
barriers it is hoped that they will replace the caution ribbon and
construction fences we are used to encountering.
Because the Great Lakes Scrip Center will be closed for spring break
during the first week of April, we must get our orders in by 9:00 AM., on
Thursday, March28. I will release the organization's order shortly after
9:00 that morning. I realize that this will be an inconvenience for some,
but this is the only way we can be sure people receive cards before the
middle of the month.
I hope you are all selling tickets for the drawing being conducted
by the parents division. As I have said before, this is replacing the food
basket drawing for this year. Since we are not meeting in person for the
spring Board Meeting, the parents are conducting a drawing for some valuable
gift cards. The proceeds from the drawing will go to help with the cost of
BELL.
I have always found that I've gotten far more out of the Federation than I
can ever put into it. Whether we are talking about the newsletter, BELL, or
a  local chapter, we each have to decide what we can do and what we can
give. Find what it is you can do or give to the Federation in the week
ahead, and I will do the same. This is how we can build the organization
together.

I have pasted and attached an updated BELL FLYER. Please use this version.

NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF OHIO

BRAILLE ENRICHMENT FOR
                  LITERACY AND LEARNING
(BELL) SUMMER PROGRAM

This program is sponsored by the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan
Institute, in partnership with the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio
and the  NFB of Ohio Parents of Blind Children Division.

Are you the parent, guardian, or teacher of a low-vision child who would
benefit from learning Braille?  We have a wonderful opportunity for these
students this summer!
The BELL summer program is a two-week day program (weekends not included)
offering prekindergarten and elementary age low-vision beginning Braille
readers immersion in Braille and fun, increasing their use of tactile skills
for reading. Children will receive Braille instruction daily as well as
learn alternative nonvisual techniques through arts and crafts, games, field
trips, and other fun.
A parent seminar will offer parents practical strategies to incorporate
nonvisual learning and Braille in their children's daily lives.
This program will be led by a certified teacher of the blind who will be
assisted by positive blind role models and local volunteers.

Program Dates:      July 15-26, 2013 (week days only)
Time:              9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Hi,
Well I might have missed this but is this book available in an alternative format for those of us who do not use Apple Products.
Is it recorded on an Audio Book we can read or is it available on Bookshare?

Hi Eric,
Well I for one am glad Bell is coming to Ohio. Will think I have to see what I can do about a Donation.
All the tickets I got for the At Large Chapter have been sold.
I will see if anyone else in the Chapter wants any tickets.
Your Updates are very informative.
I think those of us who have had the experience of working with TVI's already know that adding more people to their caseloads is a terrible idea. Also, they are not trained to work with people with Dyslexia and/or Visual Processing Disorders. At least they weren't when I went to school in that area.
I would like to see Suzanne Torner write an article about how she presented the offer to local Churches to get them to allow some for the Federation to talk to their congregations.

Hi Sheri,
I am guessing the phrase low-vision is used to indicate that children who are not totally blind are welcome and encouraged to attend. Remember some parents cannot bring themselves to say that their child is blind. By working with them these two weeks we can educate them in this area.
The word blind could be included.

Good morning,
Hi Eric, I read the flyer and it looks really good. However, I wanted to make two suggestions if possible. Instead of using blind role models, can we use role models who are blind. We should always put the individual before the disability. The second thing, is that I think the word blind should be included when saying low vision children..

Hi,
In our chapter, each individual has the responsibility of contacting their own church. Therefore, there is no set the letter. Each chapter member, will speak to their pastor of the church.
This is how we decided to do church of the month.

We should always put the individual before the disability. The second thing, is that I think the word blind should be included when saying low vision children..

Hi Suzanne,
This sounds good. It might be interesting to expand beyond our individual Churches though.
I guess this depends on how many churches are represented by our Chapter Members.

I will put my oar in because I was present on the first BELL call, when the
question of using people-first language was raised. The NFB has a policy
opposing people-first language. The articles that explain this position last
appeared in the Monitor in 2009 and before that in maybe April of 2006. They
first appeared in 1993, when Dr. Jernigan first laid out the argument
against twisting sentences around to tuck the disability away after the
noun. He pointed out that we do not insist on "people who are bankers" or
"students  who are smart." Bankers and bright students are happy enough to
have the descriptor precede the noun or be incorporated with it. His
argument was, if one is comfortable with a disability, using the word, even
preceding the noun with it is not a problem.

As for insisting that the word "blind" be added to "low-vision" in the
flier, the program was originally intended for low-vision kids who are not
getting Braille at all in school. Kids that everyone recognizes as nonprint
readers are far more likely to get at least some Braille. I raised the
question of whether or not we would allow students into the BELL program who
were already receiving Braille instruction, and I was told firmly that we
would. Those parents are likely to recognize that their kids need still more
Braille and will spontaneously urge the BELL program to include them. It is
the parents of low-vision kids who want to pretend that their kids can get
along without Braille and who therefore are likely to think the program is
not for their children. I suspect that this is why the text of the flier was
written the way it was.

Maybe those who went to Baltimore have better answers that mine.

Barbara

Hi,
In our chapter, each individual has the responsibility of contacting their
own church. Therefore, there is no set the letter. Each chapter member, will
speak to their pastor of the church.
This is how we decided to do church of the month.

Barbara,
As you stated that Dr. Jernigan preferred the disability in front of the noun as being comfortable. Then, I can understand that. The reason why I suggested this, was that politically correct is to say the person before the blindness. Therefore, perhaps maybe we do need more history behind what the Federation want us to do and wants us to say.

I am not sure what is clumsy talk. However, there is no right or wrong way. We all are here for the same purpose and good. Everyone should be treated individually and with dignity and respect.

Hi Barbara and all,
Thank you Barbara for putting your oar in the water. I couldn't remember when Dr. Jernigan commented about so-called Politial Correctness. Blindness is so much a part of most of us that we do not even think about it. When I was writing an introductry Autobiography for something in 2011 I asked that I be referred to as a blind person rather than a person who is blind.
I am glad that you are asking these questions Suzanne because that is the way we learn from each other.
You are giving us some ideas you are using in your Chapter and those of us who have been around for a while are sharing the Federation Philosophy with those of you on this Listserv.

JW and all,
Thanks so much for sending this excerpt along.  This book is available on
the NLS BARD web site as DB75554 and I have intended to read it, but your
email has prompted me to move it to sooner rather than later!  I have read
other books by this author -- The Radical Lives of Helen Keller, and Beyond
the Miracle Worker, to name two -- and she really gets it.
Thanks again for the nudge.
Deborah

Subject: A U.S. History of People with Disabilities

In the 1990's while serving as Wyoming's  Tech Act Project Director I had
the opportunity to work with a wise and well-travelled disability rights
advocate for the State of Wyoming who served on  my Wyoming Tech Act
Council.  His name was Willy,  he lived with significant mobility and speech
disabilities that came into his life as a result of a biker accident.  And
of the many valuable lessons Willy offered me there is one lesson that
stands out among the others.  Willy regularly admonished me to always
remember and never forget the history belonging to the people who have come
before me who lived with disabilities.  And he challenged if not expected me
to make sure those who would come into my life didn't forget and always
remembered this history too.  He offered that the history..."our history"
is what gives the context...the "why" of the work of inclusion and
accessibility.   Without our history as a part of the context, he would
argue, our work will not provide for the outcome we want and so desperately
need.
There is a book I came across recently from which I have attached an
excerpt, "A Disability History of the United States".  The book was
published in 2012 and I have found it to be both instructive and powerfully
moving (was for me).  In honoring Willy's admonition would you review the
attached excerpt and consider even purchasing the book so together we can
apply its lessons in and through our work at Ohio University?

Warmly,
