National Federation of the Blind of Ohio
Buckeye Update, March 22, 2013

I did not write an update last week, because Shelbi and I spent the
day at a meeting of the Ohio Vendors Representative Committee. The Business
Enterprise Program is important to all blind people, and I want Annette Lutz
and the Ohio Association of Blind Merchants to know they have our support.
On Monday we examined a proto-type of a Braille credit card that
J.P. Morgan Chase is working on. We suggested a minor change, and we think
we will see a final product next week.
On Monday evening we had another conference call with our Ohio BELL
Team. Natalie Shaheen from our national office joined us, and she is pleased
with the progress we are making toward the implementation of our first BELL
Program in Ohio. Twenty-one states in total will conduct BELL Programs this
summer, and I know that we are all proud that Ohio is among the ranks.
Tuesday evening we had our second monthly call for chapter and
division presidents. The call was well attended, and we had some good
discussions. We must help our chapters and divisions grow in every way
possible, and this is one way of doing it.
The newsletter will be completed early next week. Watch for it to
appear in your inbox. Deborah Kendrick will be recording an audio version,
and we will let you know when that is available. I am pleased with the
material we have in this issue. Please keep the need for pictures and
newsletter articles in mind between now and the middle of August. Get
pictures of what you are doing in your chapters and divisions and in your
personal lives. We need stories about active blind people and pictures to go
with them, and we need pictures to go with them. We want to have the next
issue completed in very early September, because it is our preconvention
issue.
I remind you that because the Great Lakes Scrip Center will be
closed for spring break during the first week of April, we must get our
orders in by 9:00 AM., on Thursday, March28. I will release the
organization's order shortly after 9:00 that morning. I realize that this
will be an inconvenience for some, but this is the only way we can be sure
people receive cards before the middle of the month.
I hope you are all selling tickets for the drawing being conducted
by the parents division. As I have said before, this is replacing the food
basket drawing for this year. Since we are not meeting in person for the
spring Board Meeting, the parents are conducting a drawing for some valuable
gift cards. The proceeds from the drawing will go to help with the cost of
BELL.
We have sent iPad drawing tickets to all members of the Board and Chapter
and Division Presidents this week. The tickets sell for $5 each. Please sell
all that you have received. The drawing will take place at the national
convention in Orlando this summer.
Braille leadership lists were put in the mail last week. If you have
not received yours by the end of next week, please let me know. They were
mailed Free Matter, and we all know how that class of mail is often treated.
I am attaching the Ohio scholarship application to this message.
Please spread the word about our program. I want to thank Barbara Pierce for
the work she puts into distributing this application.
We are working, building our organization, and we are changing what
it means to be blind. Keep up the good work!
