Here is one more reminder from the old gray mare. If your chapter is writing
checks to pass along to the national organization at the convention,
remember that contributions to the tenBroek Fund must be made out to the
tenBroek Fund or the Jacobus tenBroek Fund. Checks for all other funds
should be made out to the NFB with the name of the fund in the memo line.

National Federation of the Blind of Ohio Buckeye Update, May 17, 2013

Jim Jordan is the latest Ohio cosponsor of H.R. 164. I want to thank
Barbara Pierce for her hard work with Representative Jordan and his office.
She showed up at a town meeting and asked him to support the legislation. It
is important that we visit Washington and participate in the Washington
Seminar each year, but it is even more important that we follow-up and make
sure the members do what they say they will do.
Once again I remind you that the national office is putting together
an informational database concerning local chapters and divisions. I asked
that chapter presidents provide me with the following information, the day,
time, and location for your chapter or division meeting. I have heard from
many of you, but not all.

This is a good time to consider what contributions your chapter or division
can make to the National organization. If you want to include your
contribution with that of the Ohio Affiliate, Sherry Ruth must have your
check by June 15. Please make your check payable to the NFB of Ohio and
indicate how much you are contributing to each fund. Remember that the White
Cane Fund supports the general operations of the National Federation of the
Blind. The tenBroek Fund supports the maintenance of the National Center for
the Blind. SUN stands for Shares Unlimited in NFB. This is the rainy day
fund for the national organization. The Imagination Fund really helps to
build the programs that we want to have at the national level. Finally, we
have pledged to contribute a minimum of $200 for door prizes. We would like
chapters and divisions to offset that cost and add to it if at all possible.

I have just received word from the National office that Jernigan Scholarship
fund tickets will be mailed next week. Please do what you can to help sell
them. Here in part is what the letter says: As you are aware, we
established the Kenneth Jernigan Fund at our 1998 convention in Dallas. The
support from members and friends has been both generous and enthusiastic.
The committee is again sponsoring a "limited edition raffle" to raise money
for the Kenneth Jernigan Fund. The ticket cost is ten dollars. This drawing
will yield at least $10,000 net for the Kenneth Jernigan Fund.

You might ask, "What's in it for me?" Here is what's in it for you.
If you are the winner of this drawing, you will receive round-trip air
transportation for two to and from Orlando, Florida, for the National
Federation of the Blind's annual convention in July 2014. You will also
receive lodging at the Rosen Hotel for seven days during the convention.
You will receive registration and banquet tickets for two. In addition, you
will receive a cash prize of $1,000. On the other hand, if you don't win,
but you sell the winning ticket, your chapter will receive $500.

On Monday I completed the Charitable Solicitation form which is required by
the Ohio Attorney General's office. This must be filed annually. This was my
first time completing it. Barbara, JW., and Sherry Ruth can appreciate the
work it takes to complete these forms. Once again however, it does remind me
of how blessed we are to have Sherry as our Treasurer. Not only is she
absolutely honest and trustworthy, but her record keeping is meticulous, and
her memory is phenomenal.
The Cleveland chapter is having a legislative night this evening.
Suzanne Turner has been working hard to make sure that members of congress
and others hear our message and understand our issues. Barbara Pierce will
be representing the affiliate at this meeting. I can't wait to hear how it
turns out. Thank you Suzanne, Cleveland chapter and Barbara.
Tomorrow Susan Day, Shelbi, and I will staff an exhibit table at the
state wide meeting of Ohio Lions organizations. We hope to be able to let
them know of our work around the state and especially about our BELL
Program. Susan has taken the lead in creating this opportunity for us.

Tom and Sherry Ruth continue to sell iPad tickets like they're going
out of style. They even have their son in on the act. One of our brand new
members of the At-Large chapter requested tickets this week. This is all
great news. Are you doing your part to sell tickets? I know I need to work a
little harder.
As you can see we are quite busy, but there is always much to do.
Let's continue to work together to change what it means to be blind.
