Dear NFB of Ohio Colleagues,
Attached and pasted below is the information necessary for you to submit letters of nomination for our 2014 NFB of Ohio Awards. I know it is only August but September 20th will be here before you know it so please get those nominations in as soon as possible. I have sent copies of the Chapter and Division Gavel Award questionnaires to Chapter and Division Presidents in a separate email. Be sure to read the information closely and I look forward to reading your letters.

Dear Chapter or Division President:
The 2014 convention of the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio will be held at the Holiday Inn Worthington from Friday, October 31st, through noon Sunday, November 2nd. Future Buckeye Bulletins and Updates will provide additional information. The deadline for submitting award nominations and chapter and division reports for consideration by the awards committee will be Saturday, September 20th, 2014. Please send all reports and nominations to J.W. Smith, 2 Canterbury Dr., Athens, OH 45701 or via email at smithj at ohio.edu. No matter how you choose to send it, all material must be typed to be considered by the awards committee. Additionally, we will not accept anything other than the 2014 forms.
Some or all of the following awards will be given at our convention this year:
1. The Chapter Gavel Award will go to the outstanding chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio in 2014, and the Division Gavel Award will go to the most effective division. See the enclosed or attached memo and questionnaire for detailed information about the award for your group. The division and chapter Gavel Award recipients will receive $50 along with a certificate. The chapter or division that wins the Gavel Award three times consecutively will receive a plaque and a gavel. If the Awards Committee decides that a chapter or division has conducted an outstanding activity, that chapter or division will receive a $25 prize plus an opportunity to make a presentation describing the activity during the convention. In order for members of any chapter or division to vote at the convention this year, all reports must be submitted by September 20th, even if you choose not to compete for the Gavel Award. If you are not competing, please send your reports to Eric Duffy, P.O. Box 82055, Columbus, OH 43202, or to his email at peduffy63 at gmail.com.
2. The Chapter on the Move Award is presented to a chapter that demonstrates significant growth in philosophy and fundamental Federation activities.
3. The Alfonso Smith Award is presented to the outstanding blind Federationist for service to the blind of Ohio. Please note that this is a statewide award, so the service should be statewide to be considered. A letter describing the accomplishments of your nominee for this award must be sent to the awards committee by September 20th for its consideration.
4. The Ruth Garwood Award is presented to an outstanding sighted person for service to blind people across the state. This person need not be a Federationist. A letter describing your candidate's work with the blind must be sent to the awards committee by September 20th for consideration.
5. The Knall-Garwood Award is presented to a Federationist for long and loyal service to the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio. This does mean long and loyal service to the state affiliate and not to an individual or local chapter. A letter describing your candidate's work with the organization must be sent by September 20th to the awards committee in order to be considered.
The awards committee makes the following requests to those preparing materials. Please type nomination letters and reports. When it is appropriate in answering the questions for either Gavel Award, please outline in the form of sentences. Only one question requires that the answers be in paragraph form. In completing your entry for the Gavel Award, please answer to the best of your ability so that your chapter or division will receive the maximum number of points available for each question. I recommend that you appoint a small committee to complete the form; a group effort often has an advantage.
Please call me if you have any questions or comments about the awards program. Again, all nominations and reports must be in J.W. Smith's hands no later than September 20th, 2014.
Good luck to all of you, and I hope to see you in Columbus.
