I think this is a wonderful idea opening up people's homes being trained
by other blind people and most blind people I have met are truly
wonderful people and the N F B members are the best when I first lost my
eyesight I never even met a blind person I got hooked up with Barbara
Pierce I was amazed by her story I realty was she got me in touch with
Colleen Roth and the N F B I I listened to books on tape the Brail Monitor
then I got involved with the Toledo Sight center no luck there really
no blind person teaching me I got O and M also it was all right I am
going through my third o and training now I passed the Hadley School for
the blind with all A in independent living and their O and M and really
I learned more through Hadley not sure why but it was like it was from
real blind people I was reading about the the lady from the sight center
wanted me to shake my cans to tell what was in them they brought me a T
shirt folder so I could fold a T shirt and that really made me mad I
told them to take it back that I had been folding T shirts my whole fifty
years didn't need to be trained on that show me the things I need to be
independent I am a smart person just new at being blind I need to crawl
before I can walk I was a new born when it came to being blind I have
learned a lot things from my blind friend Colleen and a few others blind
people I have met on line but these professionals not so much nice
people but not what I needed they wanted me to get special lighting put
white and black contrast together things a totally blind person didn't
need like the magnifiers I didn't need them either now I have a I Phone I
need to know how to work to get all of these wonderful aps a few sighted
people have tried to help me but they couldn't figure it out either the
way a blind person does it so I am going to have blind person help me out
with it nothing against the sighted people I love them all but when it
comes to being blind you need an expert because blind people rule you
got to be pretty amazing to be blind

Dave, I like your idea. Could we write a grant for something like this so
people who do this could at least get paid a small amount of money? I think
this has some real potential here. I do believe there is a difference
between knowing a skill and teaching a skill.

I am going to give a little history lesson here. Rehabilitation Teachers
had another name in the past and were all blind. In fact, in Kansas in the
1980's you had to be blind to have the job. Then, colleges started getting
in on the education and it opened up to anyone. Over time, the number of
blind rehabilitation teachers as a percentage of rehabilitation teachers has
declined. Today the name has changed from rehabilitation teacher to
certified vision rehabilitation therapist and most agencies require the
certification in order to be hired. Now occupational therapist are also
providing this training and physical therapists are working as O&M
instructors. By the way, these medical professionals earn more money than
their ACVREP certified peers.
