[Ohio-talk] Ohio-talk Digest, Vol 93, Issue 27

It seems to me that paralysis would be considered strictly a physical
disability, because the paralysis is the cause, and the result would be
possible sensory deprivations. Blindness and deafness, on the other hand,
would be considered strictly sensual, because assuming a sensory-deprived
person has no other physical problems, the blind person can still move
around, albeit with limitations until given mobility training. In that case,
the blindness itself is causing whatever mobility limitations there are,
which can be overcome.

As a clinician I completely agree with this. Some of my music therapy
textbooks categorize visual impairment as sensory rather than physical, but
they are in the minority. One could argue that it is physical in the sense
that it hinders mobility, but deafness can have effects on mobility as well.

I'm just curious, though. If paralysis is a disorder where you can't feel
and do not have a sense of touch in a particular part of your body, would
paralysis be more of a sensory impairment than a physical one as well? Great
stuff to think about.

Kaity, that is an interesting thought. I am just trying to get people to
understand that we have different accessibility needs than people with
physical disabilities. We don't need ramps, wheelchairs and other similar
things. My concern about putting deaf and blind into sensory impairments is
that many people think blind people need sign language and tdeaf people need
braille. Again, our accessibility needs are different.

I think paralysis causes a physical limitation but blindness does not cause
that.

this is a reminder that Barbara Pierce needs to have the names of anyone who
wants to be a part of the Washington Seminar by December 1. Also please
remember that when we speak with you in early December you must know how you
are going to cover a significant portion of your cost. This could happen in
a number of ways including help and support from your chapter.

The Washington Seminar requires a lot of walking with very few breaks. Pleas
keep that in mind.

If we don?t have your name on our list by 11:59 PM. on December 1, you will
not be considered. It won?t work to say you knew I wanted to go. I go every
year. Maybe, but I told Barbara to put my name on the list.

There are a number of things we consider when making final decisions about
who is selected to participate. Of course a major consideration is that we
want to have representation from as many congressional districts as
possible.
We will start working to put our delegation together on December 2.

Thanks.

Eric

Hi Listers,

The list of items on 17 Ways to Make A Blind Person's day was right on the
money, and I would add two more items.

18. Take care of our affairs: We love it when our relatives and friends
handle our affairs and speak for us. We don't have to think for ourselves!

19. When you see someone walking with a long white cane, and you want to
guide them, be sure to pick up the other end of it. We love to give up our
control and trail behind our rescuer!

For those who do not have Barbara?s email address, it is
barbara.pierce9366 at gmail.com
It is advisable to email her directly rather than responding on list, just
so your name doesn?t get missed.

Yes! And 20. When offering assistance be sure to ignore the blind person's
senseless instructions. Grab onto them rather than letting them take your
arm, hover around to watch the spectacle while the blind person thinks
you're gone, and of course use your own judgement to decide where the person
wants to go. Blind people can't possibly know where they want to go or how
they want to get there. Ignore them when they think they know better.

Hi Sherri,

You have a great laptop!

As you know, my computer crashed a few days before yours. I asked Best Buy
for their laptop recommendations, and they suggested Asus or Lenovo as two
of the best. Asus is the primary manufacturer and supplier of computer
parts for itself and other companies, so it's best to get it from the
source.

Lenovo, which is the laptop I bought, bought up IBM's personal computer
business, so the parts are high quality.

Both these computers will provide us with long-lasting reliable service.

I completely agree, it is expensive, but has the potential to last for years
and will run multiple operating systems.
