Our exchange student from Georgia has been with us a little over two
weeks now. He is totally blind and uses echolocation very well. When
he began school he was resistant to using a white cane but we insisted
on it. He has never walked independently in unfamiliar areas so this
is a totally new experience. We were in Target yesterday and he was
using the cane and his other developed skills to follow us as we went
through the store. When we got back in the car he said, "this is
independence in my hand." I thought that was so awesome. He is on
his way to becoming an independent traveler over the next several
months with us.
