You have a point about using gratitude to solicit more support, but
your example letter is quite humorous.

Blind love is the answer, presently, and for our future!

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.

An idea for the MFI:

Make the letters asking for money an message of gratitude. 80% of us are
already receiving money from the market demographic the cause wants to
"attract." Maybe thanking those who have given so much to us would build a
relationship of trust and friendship which in turn leads to
understanding...??? Cooperation...?

A small example of what I am proposing might read well in such a letter:

Dear Friend,

I am blind. I receive $1400 unearned and on-time monthly from your
tax-driven labor. The tax money I receive from you has made it possible for
me to attend college free of all cost for tuition/books/board. Because of
your labor and tax dollars I, a person unknown to you incur no debt upon
graduation from college unlike your own self/kids. From your tax dollars I
receive adaptive technology, training, reading assistance, home aid support
for various things, subsidized door-to-door transportation, discounted bus
fare and of course the basic necessities that include food, shelter,
clothing, medical care, cable television and internet, and my iPhone with
all associated apps which again make it possible for me to live
independently. Thank you for all of this which is unfortunately not near
enough to make me independent.

Before I ask you for charity money I want to make my appreciation and
gratitude for you and all working Americans known. I know you have families
of your own and problems like anyone else. I am just like you and I
understand this. Bob Marley wrote that every man feels his burden is the
heaviest but for my needs I want you to cast aside the truth herein and take
on a little bit more of my personal life challenge bestowed upon me by a God
who does not give any of us that which we cannot handle.

This being said I want/need $250 or whatever you can afford outside of my
monthly allowance so I can go on vacation to Orlando, Florida next July.

In Orlando I will attend a meeting of thousands of blind people just like
myself who receive your assistance every month and here at this convention
we will speak of how the world you have created for us is unfair, ignorant
and in short not working for the blind.

Yes there are many cases of successful blind people working and living full
lives but these folks are only an aberration as far as my independence is
concerned so do not let this deter you from donating. This is very
important for you to understand. I am going to learn how to educate you the
public so your shared ignorance of me will not stand in my way of
independence. I'm cool and capable but you all don't see this for some
reason and I am going to teach you to see only this in me. Please do not
allow this fact to deter your charitable donations to me again and again and
again.

You might think that $250.00 is easy to earn in 350 days - A dollar a day
until the month of June arrives - but I never consider this option
because...? I don't know really.

So if you will, please again join the list of charitable organizations that
serve the blind inadequately in the areas of healthcare, higher education,
housing and please please give (donate charitably from your heart) me more
money to gain my independence from you and your unfortunate ignorance about
my blindness.

Sincerely,

Blind Person

P.S. If you like you can call me son, daughter, nephew or niece since I am
like a relative of yours who receives your charity support at large.
