> AUDIO-DESCRIBED TOUCH TOURS AT THE OHIO CRAFT MUSEUM
>
> June 8th and June 17th, 2017
>
> The Ohio Craft Museum will offer two audio described touch tours of the “Best of 2017” exhibition. This juried collection features contemporary fine craft works by 51 artists working in ceramics, wood, metal, fiber, glass and more. Some of the works are functional pieces while others make artistic statements by borrowing familiar forms or techniques. Designed for visitors who are blind or partially sighted and their companions, the tour offers the ability to experience the richness and diversity of the crafts on display. The guide, Jane Ehrenfeld, will combine verbal descriptions with the tactile experience of touching samples of materials, facsimiles or the artworks themselves.
>
> The tours will take place Thursday, June 8th at 6 pm and Saturday, June 17th at 2 pm. Space is limited for this free program; please RSVP by calling the museum at (614) 486-4402 or email info at ohiocraft.org. This program has been made possible by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council.

> What Is An Audio Described Touch Tour?
>
> By now, many of us are aware of audio description as it applies to movies, television and performances. It is the supplemental narrative that describes the visual details and actions on the screen or stage that would otherwise be inaccessible to audience members who are blind, low vision or otherwise visually impaired. But what, you may ask, is an audio described touch tour?
>
> An audio described touch tour is a tour of an exhibit that combines audio or verbal description of visual objects with the tactile experience of touching the art (when permissible) or replicas, facsimiles or other props that assist visitors who are blind or visually impaired* as well as other tactile learners in forming a fuller impression of the materials.
>
> A good audio describer provides the imagery using language but does not interpret the material being described. In the performing arts, it is the describer’s job to allow the story to unfold with all of its nuances as the director intended and in a gallery or museum setting it is to bring a dimension of experience to art and exhibits so that audiences can draw their own conclusions. In a gallery or museum setting, some interpretive material may be included if provided by the curator or artist but the tour is intended to give comparable access to the art as would be available to any other visitor.
