This morning I learned that Aidan Carter died last night. Most of you on this list didn?t know Aidan, but those of us who did are fortunate that he touched our lives. Aidan was a participant in our first Ohio BELL Academy, and he came back every summer. Last summer he came back as a volunteer, because he aged out of the program. We do the work we do to support BELL, and we change the lives of blind children, but they change our lives in immeasurable ways as well. Aidan turned 15 on December 30. He changed his corner of the world for the better in ways that many will not should they live to be 115.
I am glad to have known Aidan Carter, and I am proud to have been his friend and grateful that he was mine.

Subject: Looking for Blind Students
Greetings colleagues,
Spread the word. We are looking for blind students who can still benefit
from the Back to School awards program from AIRA and AT&T. I know that our
Nation Association of Blind Students President, Katherine Webster, has
engaged around this project. I am currently serving as Chairman of our NFB
AIRA Boosters Committee. I have been consulting with their team from a
programmatical and consumer perspective. I was happy to see that there were
still some spaces available for blind students to take advantage of the AIRA
AT&T scholarship. I think this would be an empowering experience for all
college students. And, I note that they have opened up the program beyond
Freshman. Check out the info below from AIRA and forward to all you think
might benefit from the program. I wish I was a student.
Aira Back to School Program for Blind and Low Vision College Freshman in
partnership with AT&T- 2017
In the body of this letter, please find details on the Back to School
Program. Aira is committed to our mission of extending instant access to
information for blind and low-vision people through an innovative fusion of
technology with a human agent in the loop. Our goal is to ensure that our
users share an elevated access to real-time information about one's
surroundings and environment, even when those surroundings might be highly
dynamic. No environment is perhaps more dynamic for students than a college
campus, and no experience so daunting as entering, departing or functioning
in the campus mainstream on a daily basis.
In keeping with our mission, we want to make those transitions as seamless
as possible by ensuring that students have ready and real-time access to
information that is occurring or developing around them.
Purpose of Program: The Back to School Program will select a number of blind
or low vision students who are currently enrolled in college or university .
Each student will be given a "Freshman Year" subscription to the Aira
service powered by AT&T that will allow them to access a remote agent
anytime needed during this important transition year.
Eligibility Requirements Students currently enrolled in a university/college
program are eligible.
How to Win? Submit Application: (aira.io/students) OR call 619-993-0002.
Why Participate? College students typically face challenges in the early
stages of the fast-moving environment of higher education or campus life.
Access to visual and environmental information whenever and wherever they
need it can significantly alleviate these challenges and enhance the student
life experience. Learning of such experiences and how you deal with them
helps Aira further improve the capabilities of its platform for you and
other students.

Ohio works to promote the enrichment of art for all abilities across
all artistic mediums.
Our work takes us into the classroom, galleries and public arena,
where we share information and resources with educators, artists and
administrators. We work to change perceptions about ability and
disability by helping connect people to accessible, creative
opportunities.
ABOUT AEO
AEO begins with a Call for Art open to artists with disabilities - any
age, any experience level, and all across Ohio. The annual exhibition
is selected by jurors from the call for entries. The exhibition is on
display throughout Ohio from March through December. Art work is for
sale while on tour and artists are sent postcards so they know where
their art is on display.
An Opening Ceremony takes place in March where every artist received a
certificate and awards are given for Best in Show, People's Choice,
and 1st, 2nd, 3rd place for each entry category (youth, emerging,
professional).
The paintings will travel the state, March thru October.
Again, great work Regina!
