Richard. Thanks so much for the follow up. I'm certainly sending positive
prayers for your sister, Tammy. Also-thank you so much for the guidelines
about caring for a loved one who is hospitalized when you are Blind. This is
an issue that is very much on my mind as my dad is a disabled veteran and my
mom works in retail full-time.

Thank to all of you, I think this speaks volumes. My sisters name is
Tammy Bayero and she is in Grandview medical center in Dayton. I wish time
would allow me to tell you the full story that concludes with a blind man
putting medical staff on alert. Tammy is finally in a private room and after
calling the so-called advocate who could not be reached until after the late
afternoon yesterday. Then finding some way to communicate with all parties
including the maintenance things may be getting better.
As a family member or loved one of a hospitalized patient, you are an
integral member of the healthcare team. The more informed you are about the
patient's care, the better! There are several ways you can participate in
order to be a contributing member of this team:
* Explain up front to the healthcare care team that you are there to
help your family member and to be a part of the team caring for them.
* Be present for rounds, shift changes, and any major conferences with
the care team. If you are not invited to do so, ask when they are likely to
happen. Remember that hospital care is not like factory work and schedules
are not perfect-but team members may be able to align schedules if you
communicate with them.
* Take notes both for you and for your family member.
* When the patient is recovering from surgery, see if you can arrange
to be there or have another loved one with them in the room overnight until
their recovery advances.
* Arrange with other loved ones to play tag team on staying with the
patient. If you are exhausted, you will not be as helpful another,
well-rested family member or loved one. Let the care team know who will be
there in your place, especially if the person is staying overnight.
* Visit the hospital library to get accurate, reliable information on
the patient's problem. A librarian can help point you to reputable website

Dear Colleagues, I wanted to let you know that after getting off the call
Monday night I learned that my sister was rushed to the emergency room. She
is still in the hospital and they have not figured out what is wrong but if
you do not reach me or need something answered quick please include that in
the subject line of your message. Let's keep building the federation.
