Hello folks. This is a legislative action alert from the Autism Society of
Ohio concerning proposed changes to the Continuing Disability Review process
for Social Security recipients. This notice does not mention if it just
applies to disabled recipients or if blind recipients are also impacted.
People with Autism are considered disabled by SSA-not blind. Is anyone from
the Federation aware of this proposal and are we involved?
Just an FYI.

Social Security Rule Could Put People with Autism at Risk
Submit Comments Before Jan. 31
Summary
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has proposed a rule that would
require complicated paperwork more often and put benefits for thousands of
people with autism and other disabilities at risk. The proposed rule would:
* Require more frequent "Continuing Disability Reviews" to determine
if you or your family member(s) still have a disability
* Require people to fill out complicated paperwork 2.6 million more
times over the next ten years
* Put benefits for thousands of people with disabilities at risk
* Cut $2.8 billion in Social Security and SSI benefits
Background
This rule would increase how often adults and children with disabilities
must prove that they have a disability. This process is called Continuing
Disability Reviews and can be extremely complicated. People with
disabilities, their families, their teachers, and their service providers
often spend weeks gathering information and making sure forms are filled out
correctly. Even minor errors on a form can put Social Security or
Supplemental Security Income benefits at risk, as well as Medicaid services
and other benefits. Unfortunately, SSA often makes mistakes in these
reviews, forcing people with disabilities and their families to hire lawyers
and spend years getting back the benefits they are entitled to. The proposed
rule would cut $2.8 billion in Social Security and SSI benefits.
Action Needed

burdensome.
Urge SSA to rescind this proposal. It is not supported by data. It does not
fully explain how it would work if enacted so it is not possible to give
full comments on it. It will greatly increase the burden on people with
disabilities and their families and providers. SSA should not go forward
with this proposed rule.
Briefly explain some of the problems your members, their families, rep
payees, etc. already have dealt with SSA and that you don't want these
problems to get worse. Instead of SSA spending $1.8 billion in
administrative costs to do more CDRs (that is their estimate for the next 10
years) the agency should spend that money on things that would help
beneficiaries.
