I like these same silicon sheets to line the bottom rack of my oven and the shelves of my refrigerator. I merely wash the silicon in soapy dishwater and put them back again. Eventually I have to replace them as liners, but not for at least a year or two.

I don’t know if this counts, but I really love the silicon sheets in various sizes to use with cookie sheets, pie plates, and square or rectangular pans of various sizes. These require no greasing and prevent sticking. The round one I use as a guide to roll out pie crust in an even round shape for lining a pie plate. You can pick the crust up when finished and invert the pie plate on top of it and then peal off the sheet, leaving the crust perfectly centered, lining the pie plate and ready to bake or fill. The liners for cookie sheets eliminate the question of greasing or not greasing the cookie sheet, and the cookies lift off the sheet without a struggle. I line my 13-by-9-inch pan before filling it with brownie batter. When the brownies are done, I loosen the edges and invert the pan on a cooling rack. The brownies fall out neatly, and you can lift off the sheet and cut the brownies, very slick.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise expectations for blind people because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and their dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.

The big topic everyone is talking about is life hacks. As we know blind people have been using “life hacks” since they became blind. We call them nonvisual techniques. I would like people to share a life hack that has helped them in any part of life. We may give other people ideas. I have been blind since birth and now I am old but I still learn life hacks that help me.

I grew up in a family who could not afford many of the tools that were developed for blind people. When I began cooking and needed to drain water off of anything I use a strainer or colander. Mom always used the lid of the pan and some blind people may do this but it didn’t work well for me. Now, you can buy pasta pots that have a lid with holes so you can drain pasta. When I was a girl there were locking lid pans but we certainly didn’t have any.

Now it’s your turn.
