Good morning,

I would like to thank everyone for the work done and for the sake of not confusing or causing a misunderstanding on the list let me be very clear.

We the NFB of Ohio and anyone that works together to do what we can to promote a better life for blind people in Ohio should work with each other.

I have talk with President Riccobono and my commitment for the Federation has always been the same and I have continued to be active it is my gift back to the community each one of us give a gift and are rewarded by membership in the Federation.

Let’s work together and build the NFBO and work as a team yes, I appoint the chairs of each committee and will continue to support efforts to grow the Federation even where it concerns the committees.

You may always contact me off list if you wish to reach me fast no text and emails are preferred because I check them several times a day.

We all have different talents, and no member is perfect including me, but my talents mostly consist of keeping the blind people’s movement moving to the best of my ability.

I hope everyone will enjoy a very good holiday season and do not stress yourselves or others out doing this time.

Richard Payne, President National Federation of the Blind of Ohio

The National Federation of the Blind advances the lives of its members and all blind people in the United States. We know that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. Our collective power, determination, and diversity achieve the aspirations of all blind people.

Hello Andra and Carolyn,

The 135th General Assembly began in January, 2023. Within a month or two of that point I was no longer an active member of the Federation. In January 2024, I approached Representative Brown and requested that he reintroduce the legislation, which he did. Given these circumstances, I did not want to be critical of the Federation in my last message, although I think it is fair to say now that the Bill should have been introduced in 2023 either through the effort of the Federation , or that in my individual capacity, I should have gotten it introduced sooner. I take personal responsibility for not having done so.

In my last message I did not want to appear to criticize the organization, which I was not an active member of during most of 2023 and 2024. Thus, I deliberately put the responsibility for not getting the Bill introduced in 2023 squarely on my own shoulders.

When proponent testimony was required, it was gratifying to observe the Federation in action again. even though I was not a member at the time. At the final hearing, Richard and I were the only individuals to present in person, Richard, as the President of this affiliate, and I, as an individual. We both appreciated each other’s testimony that day.

Following my meeting with President Riccobono in mid-November of this year, I reaffirmed my commitment to the Federation’s work and have since begun my efforts to do so.

I am aware that Suzanne serves as Legislative Director, and that Richard is the President of the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio, and I respect that. Given the fact that the Bill was introduced so late in this GA, I was cognizant of the likelihood that the Bill would not pass again despite our best efforts. In the spring of this year, I began working on the campaign of a candidate for the State House, who will begin her first term in January.

Prior to her election and well before my meeting with President Riccobono, I asked her to reintroduce the legislation once more if she was elected and there was still a need. Both things are now true.

Another budget cycle that consumes the House’s resources for approximately the first half of the year begins in January. It is imperative that this legislation be introduced in the new GA as expeditiously as possible. , I will respect President Payne’s decision if he informs me that he does not wish for me to represent the Federation in this matter, particularly if the organization has a different strategy. As I previously said to President Riccobono, I am totally in, or I am not in at all. I am working in my chapter because I believe we must all support the work of the Federation at every level. I am resolute in my determination to secure the passage of this legislation during the 136th General Assembly. I recognize that collective effort is essential for success. I am committed to taking any necessary actions to ensure its implementation, regardless of whether I hold an office or serve on a committee in this organization. I now understand better than ever before that we are much better off marching together than we are walking alone.

There are several factors that brought me to this conclusion. One of them is the way that Richard, Suzanne, Theresa, and Wilburt, and I worked together at the State House on HB 427 in September.

You may hear about the other factors in time.

I certainly did not intend to create any confusion among the membership.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Eric

Good evening, everybody,

I’m confused, don’t we all work just as hard on these issues when it comes to legislation? Should we start doing something earlier? Thanks.

Our Prescription Labeling legislation did not make it to the finish line this General Assembly. The mistake I made was not getting the Bill introduced until January of this year. This is the second year of the session. I won’t make the same mistake again. In fact, I have a sponsor lined up and we should get the new Bill introduced in early 2025.
