Of course all of us have responsibility to work for the legislation we hope to pass in the legislature or the Congress. That is why we are consistently asked to make calls and write testimony. Nothing was done about the accessible labeling bill during the first year of this closing legislative session. So Eric, who knows the players and who is trusted by those nationally who are working on the accessible labels efforts, was urged to begin working on the introduction of this bill in the Senate. That was last January. He told us in his email that he really should have begun work the year before. Nothing prevented the NFB-O Legislative Committee from doing the work at the beginning of the term. Eric cares about this legislation, so he has promised to begin work on it early next year. I don’t see anything wrong with his actions.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise expectations for blind people because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and their dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.

This is the second year of the session. I won’t make the same mistake again. In fact, I have a sponsor lined up and we should get the new Bill introduced in early 2025.
