I remembered that a post on the list talked about shopping and getting
assistance.
Well yesterday I took a chance and went to a new store to buy food and the
young lady at the counter said they were very short handed.
Normally when I go into the store the staff are very familiar with me, and
I get great help.
They called a person who said he was the store supervisor and asked didn't
someone drop me off after telling him yes, he repeated that they were short
of staff.
I asked him his name again and proceeded to tell him that I needed
assistance to shop. He asked what I was shopping for and where was my list.
This was a random shopping trip, so no list and I wanted to see what sales
were running.
He told me he could point out items and offered to tell me which way to go
to find the product.
The funny thing is that I said to him if you are a supervisor were you up to
date with the law and he said yes.
Well, my response was direct then you know that the law requires you to
assist me with shopping I could feel his mood changing.
then, he wrote down some items and ran around to get those items that I
could think of off the top of my head. When he returned with a limited
amount of the items, I insisted that he take me around the store which he
did.
He helped me to go through the line and outside where I could get my ride.
The man came back out and gave me the direct number to the location and said
if I wanted to call ahead the next time he would make sure someone would be
available I shook his hand and said thanks.
I may call but probably not because even if I just walk in it will be my
intent to educate them and make the store aware of how to assist us.

The National Federation of the Blind advances the lives of its members and
all blind people in the United States. We know that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. Our collective power, determination,
and diversity achieve the aspirations of all blind people.
