Timeless Women See Through Blindness

There are thousands of people in this country who need a voice to speak 
up for them. They are silent and suffer prejudice from a society that 
sees them as disabled, because they are blind.

Donna Hill is that voice. She rejects what she calls, "the pity factor." 
Donna was born legally blind with Retinitis Pigmentosa. She was the 
first blind student mainstreamed in her public school and suffered 
bullying and denial of aids that would help her learn. She did not learn 
Braille until after she graduated from college. Refusing to sink into 
feeling "handicapped," she became a recording artist, a journalist and 
an outspoken advocate for blind people everywhere.

Now a volunteer for the nonprofit Performing Arts Division of the 
National Federation of the Blind (NFB), Donna uses her talents to spread 
the word about the many capabilities of blind people and the desperate 
need for teaching blind children Braille and other non-visual skills.

The Center for Disease Control predicts the number of blind adults will 
triple by the year 2050 because of adult onset diabetes. Donna's message 
is now more important than ever before.
