Hello all.
Just a few things about the talent show.
The talent show goes back years, and the old music division was running it. In 2006, the music division voted themselves out of division status and became a group. That is when the music group chair handed over the talent show to the performing arts division. The talent show has always been for people to have fun and show support for friends and family. There has never been a screening process to perform in the talent show. A couple of years ago the performing arts board discussed changing the format of the show. This format would have set up a system close to what Kevin Reeves is talking about now. The board decided to keep the talent show the way it is, but with slight changes such as the amount of people, and the length of the show.

The board felt that they would like to keep the show as a laid back fun feature of the national convention. The board also felt that they would like to set up a separate show in the way that Kevin is speaking about now. That show would take more time to set up.

The division is here to serve its members and blind performers at large, and does not want to make anybody feel like they are not included. If there is a big push by members and blind performers that the nature of the talent show change, then the board will look into it as soon as possible.

When discussing changes to the talent show, please try and think of it from the board’s point of view as well. There are lots of people who like to perform every year, that may otherwise be screened out in an enhanced format. Please give thought to those people who just want to get on stage and enjoy themselves. The division has put in things like door prizes, and has limited the amount of people that can sign up, so the show can end on time.
Keeping this in mind, feel free to continue with the discussion. There are some performing arts leadership members on this list, and we would be happy to address these concerns.

I have gotten some private messages from people offering help, and I will be getting back to them.
Thank you for taking an interest in the talent show and the division.

Dennis Sumlin: President, Performing Arts Division.
