Hi all,

Sorry I'm so late to the discussion, but I have some thoughts I can add.

I've had the same problems as a lot of you when auditioning or
performing in plays.  In middle school I got a lot of the smaller
roles simply because they limited the choreography directors had to
teach me, and by the end of it I just wasn't cast.  I landed a role in
Much Ado About Nothing by Shakespeare in high school and loved that as
well, but again the director was not very accommodating.  I don't
think he gave me a smaller part to limit his involvement with me, but
he definitely didn't give me much attention when I came to him with
questions because of the size of my part.  I've had more success in
productions like the radio plays Ohio NAPUB puts on each year at our
state convention, but that's where the problem lies.  It's easy to be
evaluated for the acting ability in your voice when you're being
judged by other blind people who don't hold your blindness against
you, or fret over visible signs of chemistry.

A few years ago Braille Beats, a fine arts program I attended in
Michigan, put on an original musical in lieu of a recital at the end
of the week.  It was called "Bach to the Future" and blended the basic
plot points of Back to the Future with biographical information on
Bach, juxtoposed into the setting of 2 blind Braille Beaters traveling
back in time to get Bach out of a writer's block.  Our primary
director, who did everything from choreography to writing the music
along with our music director, was visually impaired himself.
Everyone in the cast of course was blind, and the more logistical
movements were staged by Daniel Kish.  Our choir director was blind as
well.  The only people who were sighted were the music director who
was at the piano as our accompanist, the program director who
administrates Braille Beats, and the teenaged volunteers, our resident
handy man, and one student's mother who helped move sets between
scenes and run our "backstage" opperations.  It was a bear to put
together in just 9 days, but we loved how positive it was.  Blindness
didn't play much of a role in the musical at all except for the parts
where Braille Beats was mentioned, and everyone was able to really
focus on telling the story.  Though I certainly don't advocate trying
to tech a musical from start to finish in just 9 days, with half the
day not even being spent working on the musical due to other program
requirements, it can be done.  I am still in contact with the director
of the program and can get some information on some of the behind the
scenes or lesser known tactics that made the show successful.  It was
quite the elaborate production, so I would imagine some jems of wisdom
could be gleaned.

I'd be happy to assist with this project in that regard at the least
for the time being.  We might also want to check in with the blind
lawyers, as I think their mock trial performances usually have some
staging involved as well.  LCB usually puts on a play too and we could
get in contact with someone about how they do that.  Though they're
not professional actors, anything might give us useful information.
