Emo is short for emotional. It grew out of punk music in the early 80s. It
originally had a message or point. Known for melodic sounds, differing
rhythms and usually personal lyrics. Fans often feel very connected to the
lyrics and can become "emotional." Often, emo songs address depression,
love, shame, anger, loneliness, etc. One internet source says it was an
attempt to, "Marry The intensity of hardcore with the complex emotions
associated with growing older." It began with a harder sound and has evolved
into something spanning a cross-genre section of punk sounds. Today, it's
often associated with guitar melodies, sweeping instrumentation, usually
containing strings, and "emotional" lyrics. It can be a controversial label
for many bands. Some reject the label, though they are defined by it.

Nirvana and Green Day were once labeled emo, but nowadays, groups like the
Plain White Tees and All American Rejects are what most think of when they
think of emo music.
