What is the National Federation of the Blind of Washington?

As an affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind the NFB of
Washington improves blind people’s lives through advocacy, education,
research, technology, and programs encouraging independence and
self-confidence. In January 2004 the NFB opened the National Federation of
the Blind Jernigan Institute, the first research and training center in the
United States for the blind led by the blind.

Why a Conference in Washington State?

With states cuts in social services serving families with special needs
children and with state efforts to cut programs at the Washington State
School for the Blind and Department of Services for the Blind it is time
that educators and families with blind children work with the blind
community to receive support and learn how to best serve their children.

Agenda:

Topics will include* Making it Work© in the public school system, who is
responsible for the literacy goals for blind children, what skills do blind
children need to be successful adults, how do educators and parents work
together to promote lifelong goals for blind children. ***

*Educator clock hours will be available.***
