This course will cover the following:
*        The nature of sound and how humans perceive it
*        Sound in the environment and how sound is used by humans to move through their environment
*        The anatomy and physiology of the auditory system with emphasis on function
*        Common disorders of the auditory system and how these can manifest themselves
*        Principles of  basic audiology and how to understand and relate to the audiologist
*        A review of hearing aids, both the technology and application of the technology to various auditory disorders.

This course will assist students in understanding how technology can provide access to communication and to the curriculum for children who are visually impaired with additional disabilities including deafblindness.  Students will explore a spectrum of assistive technology from simple technology to high tech and develop a framework to identify features to meet the educational needs of this population.  Methods of using assistive technology to support curriculum will be explored and demonstrated through the creation of customized computer activities using current multimedia authoring programs. Strategies for integrating assistive technology into the classroom in both self-contained and inclusive settings will be discussed.

This online course is designed to train participants to teach reading of elementary and intermediate level Braille music. Participants will learn music Braille notations and basic transcription rules for preparing elementary and intermediate level Braille music. Important aspects for teaching Braille users to read Braille music are covered. The use of special computer software to translate music into Braille, and sources for acquiring Braille music are reviewed. Participants are required to use a Braille editor for completing all exercises and to submit exercises in digital format. A strong working knowedge of print music is required. If you feel you are interested in music braille and do not feel you have the foundations in music, contact Sandy Smith for more information on upcoming introduction to music braille workshop.

This course provides an in-depth study of access methods to digital material currently available for students using screen readers and audio files for curriculum and instructional needs. Course participants will work with commercially available software packages, as well as the widening range of free screen readers and audio applications. This course simulates methods of operation employed by visually impaired students. Screen readers features and capabilities for JAWS will be studied in-depth. Methods of audio file creation and acquisition will be covered, along with options for necessary players. Methods for working with students with a variety of needs will be covered.  Students are expected to have completed a basic course on assistive technology for the visually impaired, or have instructor permission. Introductory knowledge of screen readers and operating Windows without a mouse are required. Students must have local administrative access to a computer with Windows operating system (XP or higher) and Microsoft Office (2003 or higher) for this course.

NERCVE, in an ongoing effort to support teachers of the visually impaired, is please to offer two web based curriculums for "Sustaining Braille Proficiency". These independent, self-paced studies are designed to address the on-going needs of dedicated professionals to refresh and maintains skills with the Literary and Nemeth Codes. Both modules feature the exciting new NERCVE Online Drill and Practice Brailler, which allows six-key braille entry through the computer's keyboard with immediate feedback assuring accuracy.
*        Available on-demand for 3 month intervals
*        Multimedia review presentations
*        All course materials are provided online
