Hello Fellow Educators:

I actually realize that a few other students who havea visual impairment need their eye reports to be updated prior for me to begin teaching these students. The parents of these children's parents have scheduled appointments for a low vision exam at SUNY optometric center in New York City. I have realized that when speaking to each parent that there is a bit of apprehension about this whole low vision exam for each of my students; I have agreed to accompany each student with the respective parent to the scheduled appointmet. Have other more experienced TVIs who teachstudentwho are visually impaired and have additional disabilities, accompanied students with additional disabilities to a low vision exam? What tips can I give to the parents prior and during the low vision exam. My students are visually impaired, have developmental disabilities are nonverbal and nonambulatory. One student who has been scheduled for a low vision exam has developmental disabilities, has autism, is visually impaired, nonverbal and can walk but needs guidance where to go. At the school, this student is always with a Para. The parents of this student don't speak English well. I plan to have parents of the students pick me up to accompany the parents and students to their respective appointments. The one thing that concerns me is that each student is being seen by a different low vision specialist at this clinic. I did try to see if the students could be seen by a particular specialist, but the specialist does not see any childrenwho are visually impaired with additional disabilities presently. In the past this specialist has seen children with additional disabilities with a visual impairment. I hope I can get some tips for assisting the parents of these students become comfortable about the low vision exam and during the low vision exam. Thanks for any input from more experienced tvis who teach students who are blind or visually impaired with additional disabilities for their input concerning low vision exam for these students. Another parent has scheduled a an ophthalmologist appointment for the child and contacted me personally to inform me about the development. I don't if one parent will schedule aan appointment for the child for a low vision exam. Both myself and various people at the school have urgred the parent to comply with the need for the child to be evaluated and receive an updated eye report so I can begin teaching the student and have accurate information about this student's visual impairment. This student sits in a wheelchair but is ambulatory a bit. Ultimately, it will be up too this student;s parent to get child evaluated for me to continue teaching this student. I have done the best I can for this student. Thanks for any input from more experienced tvis about what to explain parents about a low vision exam considering the population of students I teach.
