[Pibe-division] borrowing in subtraction problems with Nemeth code

Hello:

Long years ago when I learned carrying and borrowing, we kept the numbers in our heads. I would see a problem set up:

  242

- 163

A dashed line was below. We knew to borrow 1 from 4 to make 12. 12-3 = 9

9 was written in the units column. The 4 was really then a 3 and borrowing 1 from the 2 made 13. 13-6 = 7.

7 was written in the tens column. The 2 was really a 1 and 1-1 = 0. Since 0 was the leading digit. It wasn’t recorded. A classic Perkins worked well for this.

Regards,

Robert

Yes, it is what I am asking. If the problem is 242 - 163 would you have them use the cancellation marks around the numbers that need to be changed? It just seems like so much work. I have been blind all of my life but did not learn or use Nemeth code in school.

Hi Marianne,
I typically only showed my students proper Nemeth code for borrowing so they could understand what is in the textbook. I never had them “cross out” anything using the proper Nemeth symbols when writing their problems. Is this what you are asking or am I missing the mark?
