Here in the state of Missouri, we have a program known as the Missouri
assistive technology project. One of its programs is an equipment loan
program to do just the kind of thing you are talking about. The idea is that
you get some hands-on time with the piece of equipment before you either
purchase it or ask someone to purchase it on your behalf. I don't know the
state in which you live, but if it is Missouri I'll give you the contact
information.
