Bruce,
Don't throw the old computer away. You can go ahead and go whatever
direction you want with a new computer, but usually when an old computer
starts running slow and acting up, it's not a hardware problem, it's a
Microsoft problem. After you get set up with whatever new route you want
and get used to it, consider using that old one for a test unit that you
can install Linux on. There's a build of Linux that's being developed
for VI and deaf users. See my signature below and check out the Vinux build.
It'll give you a great dependable spare machine to keep around and a
great chance to get a handle on Linux. Unless you've got a hardware
problem I can guarantee your old computer will run better and faster
than it ever did, even when new.

No Microsoft garbage used here, sent by a very satisfied Linux-Mint
<http://www.linuxmint.com/> user (a former disgruntled Microsoft user).
You could check out Vinux, Linux for the visually impaired
<http://wiki.vinuxproject.org/>, and on FaceBook.

This email and any attachments are not virus scanned either, that's up
to you poor Microsoft users to deal with.
Got Windows problems? Who doesn't? Don't toss your cookies, toss your
operating system.
I prefer to be a wild and wacky Linux Penguin than a docile,
domesticated, Microsoft sheep getting fleeced.
