This is an interesting year for braille, isn't it?

So we have Canute, a multiline braille ereader that is slated to cost around $600-$700, or anyway, less than the cost of a Perkins. Very mechanical, with motors and, well, if you saw last year's video with last year's prototype (and I'm sure it's better, faster, and quieter this year), it sounds a bit steampunk. Kind of cool for that. Second closest thing to production that's out there. Then there's the Orbit Reader 20, rumored to cost around $500 for a 20-cell display. More portable than Canute, and also more versatile, since it's more than just an ereader and can be paired with other devices. The cells it uses are rumored to be some new kind of technology, whose details are not exactly forthcoming, but promises to make cheaper displays across the board, and the quality of the braille is rumored to be excellent. In the "Coming real soon now" department are the Dot Watch and Dot Pad (which is later), and Blitab, which is supposed to be debuted in beta form later this month. Blitab and DotPad are again rumored to be multiline displays, with rumored new technology to make braille cells. Wonder if anyone saw either of these at CSUN? Whatever the case, this is much more action in the refreshable braille space than we've seen in a really long time. Pretty exciting stuff!

This relationship has brought the Canute to where it is now - ready to expand access to Braille literacy to all blind people.
