[Quietcars] Prius Gets Sound Option

Lest anyone on this or other blindness lists that I post to think that I'm
against noise for hybrids or quieter cars, nothing could be further from the
truth. What I am for is a uniformly agreed upon noise or sounder that is
agreeable to every blind or hard of hearing person, or person with sight who
travels with an elbow, cane, guide dog, two feet, on a bike, or in another
car that makes sense. There are too many chirping sounds, beeps, clicks,
clocks, squawks and burps out there that already are totally confusing to
anyone on foot, let alone t anyone who's blind and uses a cane or dog.
Nissan's plan is sound, and the NFB has been recognized as having agreed
upon the sounds that this vehicle makes and has stated, on more than one
occasion according to an article that was posted on this list, this is such.
Makes sense now for those who have agreed, when the senate passes the hybrid
act, to implement this sound or one like it across the board after
sufficient testing in all areas, using all mobility aids possible, and all
types of individuals as their testers. I'm hoping that all manufacturers of
quieter cars, trucks, cycles, and motorized transport type vehicles will see
the sense in doing such and with rapidity.

Thanks, Bob.

Hi Michael,

I agree with your note of caution and would add that the Leaf remains a
marketing proposal. The first production Leaf has not yet been sold and on
the road. This is the link I use to track hybrid sales in July:
http://www.hybridcars.com/hybrid-clean-diesel-sales-dashboard/july-2010.html

Still it is an ill-wind that blows no good. Toyota has just eliminated the
Lotus "business model" . . . the claims two years ago that Lotus sees adding
noise generators as a future profit center. It didn't make sense then and
even less today.
