"Highly Charged Motoring" reports on several autos powered primarily or exclusively by electric motors.  At the end of the article there is mention of one Lotus model now with a built in feature offering several alternative sounds to reduce the danger of that "quiet car" to pedestrians and bicyclists, also satisfying the driver's psychological expectation for operational sound.
