Ken this Lotus project has been in either the news or in the works for some
time now. However, as clever as it might be, if I'm remembering correctly,
the sound enhancement is driver programmable. This means that one can shut
the feature off. However, be this as it might, it is a step in the right
direction, rather than just hearing a ding, beep or chirp, this may be a
realistic approach with sound emanating from all four corners of the car,
thus giving the pedestrian some clue as to where the car is clearly coming
from.

The facts are that Nissan, Chevy, Volvo and even Chinese manufacturers are
bringing in all electrically powered vehicles to combat the cost of oil
fueled cars or hybrids of gasoline and electric motors. So, solutions are
just inventors away.

Thanks for sharing.

"Highly Charged Motoring" reports on several autos powered primarily or
exclusively by electric motors. At the end of the article there is mention
of one Lotus model now with a built in feature offering several alternative
sounds to reduce the danger of that "quiet car" to pedestrians and
bicyclists, also satisfying the driver's psychological expectation for
operational sound. It is in the Science & Technology section of the March
19thECONOMIST. The article is available via NEWSLINE for a few more days,
and on the internet I am sure.
