Have you ever thought about O. & M.? Are you a good traveler? There is a great program in Louisiana that emphasizes nonvisual monitoring if your own travel skills are up there. O. & M. often pays better if you work for the government instead of a private center or school district. You still get to rehabilitate people but you would be more specialized and people would look to your expertise. There is also a shortage in the profession and work isn't hard to find. That being said, we need good rehab teachers and TVI's as well. I would say if you aren't in it for the dough, go be a TVI in a school district. We need them most of all.

Whenever you get my opinion, you always get your money's worth.

Subject: [rehab] rehab teacher training

Hi there, I'm trying to decide whether to get into rehab teaching or pursue a teacher for the visually impaired job. Can anyone give me an idea of what the day in the life of a rehab teacher looks like? How about a day in the life of a teacher for the visually impaired (TVI?)

I am totally blind. I will still need to be certified before doing either job. I do have a bachelor's degree.

Any colleges you recommend? I'm hoping to complete the coursework online for the most part.

It appears that the TVI training is a 4 semester program. Would the rehab programs out there be about the same length? Are the two training programs very different or are they similar?

And last but likely not least, does one typically have to take the GRE's to get into these kinds of programs? I seriously have a standardized testing phobia. Taking the SAT's was my worst nightmare and I dread having to do the GRE's.

Thanks for any feedback you all might have.

Kate
