*General Information*
The Teacher/Orientation and Mobility and Travel Instructor will serve in an
itinerant position for students who are visually impaired and students with
disabilities other than a visual impairment in their schools and
communities. The Teacher/Orientation and Mobility and Travel Instructor
must possess the functional abilities to monitor travel and subscribe to
the professional code of ethics.
*Qualifications*
*M**inimum Qualifications*
Must have a valid Blind /Visually Impaired teaching license issued by the
Minnesota Department of Education and be certified as an Orientation and
Mobility Specialist (COMS) by the Academy for Certification of Vision
Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).
*Preferred Qualifications*
- A degree in Orientation and Mobility.
- Experience teaching students who are visually impaired and students
with disabilities other than a visual impairment.
- Experience evaluating student needs, abilities and limitations related
to independent travel.
- Experience in designing an individualized program with goals and
objectives to assist the student in realizing his/her unique potential.
- Experience in teaching the concepts, skills and techniques necessary
for safe and efficient travel.
- Experience in working cooperatively as a member of an education team.
- Experience with communicating in written and oral forms.
- A strong interest and investment in continuing education.
*Responsibilities*
The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following
fundamental duties:
- Evaluate the needs and abilities of students in order to develop and
implement innovative methods for providing instruction to students.
- Teach the techniques necessary for effective indoor and outdoor travel.
- Coordinate the various support and related staff available to aid
visually impaired learners (braillist, vocational rehabilitation specialist
or other related specialists as necessary).
- Teach the skills the learner needs (listening skills, Braille, use of
adaptive technology or other related skills as necessary) to successfully
complete her/his education.
- Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team for blind/visually
impaired or multiply impaired learners; participate in staffing meetings
that will develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for individual
students.
- Make periodic written and oral reports on student progress to district
staff and parents.
- Conduct in services and presentations at schools, conferences and
community agencies.
- Contribute to the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities
efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement
and the alignment and sustainability of resources.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
*Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule*
This is a 10 month position working full-time.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Teacher negotiated labor
agreement. The labor agreement and salary schedule can be found at
http://hr.spps.org/Labor_Agreements.html. The minimum rate of pay for this
position is $43,021 annually.
Benefits are available to new employees after 30 days of active
employment. Benefits include medical insurance, life insurance, sick

credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed
