*Job Summary*

Minnesota State Services for the Blind (SSB) has been serving blind,
visually impaired and DeafBlind Minnesotans since 1923.  It does so with a
staff of 110 dedicated personnel, over 650 skilled volunteers, an active
State Rehabilitation Council for the Blind and a host of community
partners.  Each year SSB assists thousands in leading full, active and
productive lives.  Come be part of a great organization in a great state.

This position is responsible for the transcription of braille, in an
accurate and timely manner, that produces educational/vocational reading
materials for blind Minnesotans in K-12 and adult requested materials.  By
using Braille 2000 and Duxbury braille software, Perkins six-key manual
brailler, and the Duxbury Perky Duck.  SSB braillists transcribe to ensure
that braille formats are consistent and all braille transcriptions are in
accordance with BANA (Braille Authority of North America) regulations and
in agreement with other braille guidelines.  This position will also assist
the Braille Supervisor in organizing, coordinating, and assisting at
workshops for braille transcribers as well as providing braille format
consultations for volunteer brailists transcribing for State Services for
the Blind.

Duties Include:

1.  To transcribe K-12 print textbooks and/or vocational materials into
braille.  Reading material may contain foreign languages, mathematics,
musical scores, and other adult requested materials.

2.  Convert charts, graphs, mathematical diagrams, flowcharts, geometric
drawings, into raised-line tactile graphics.

3.  Provide needed consultation on BANA braille regulations to certified
braille transcribers who volunteer for State Services for the Blind.

*Qualifications*



*Minimum Qualifications:*

Certified in Unified English Braille (UEB)
Proficient in Nemeth or actively working toward certification in "*The
Nemeth Code for Mathematics and Science Notation, 1972*"
Proficiency in creating a wide variety of tactile graphics, such as maps,
charts, and mathematical diagrams.
Proficiency in transcribing Chemistry, Foreign Languages, and/or Music
Braille.
Be familiar with "Guidelines and Standards for Tactile Graphics, 2010"

CANDIDATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR BRAILLE SKILLS.

All braille transcriptions are produced in accordance with Braille
Authority of North America (BANA) regulations and in agreement with BANA
guidelines outlined in the "*Braille Formats, Principles of Print to
Braille Transcription, 2016*" and "*The Rules of Unified English Braille
Second Edition, 2013*".
