Here is a brief explanation of the position and some of the duties as
advertised.
What you will be doing:
As a Birth through Age 13 (B-13) Specialist at DSB's Birth - 13
Program, you will play a vital role in fostering the growth and
independence of youth under age 14 who are Blind, Deaf Blind, or Low
Vision. Your responsibilities will involve developing and delivering
information and referral resources, coaching sessions, workshops, and
activities aimed at enhancing independence, fostering peer mentorship,
promoting networking opportunities, nurturing self-advocacy, and
facilitating early career exploration. Working with youth across the
state, you will provide these services through remote channels, offer
transportation support options, and create local activities. In
addition, your role extends to supporting the broader network of the
youth, including family members, parents, siblings, guardians, and
grandparents, by assisting them in understanding visual disability,
connecting with the blindness community, and supporting
age-appropriate development and independence for youth with visual
disabilities. Join us in making a meaningful impact on the lives of
young individuals by contributing to their self-confidence,
independence skills, and readiness for future transitions.
Duties
Some of what you'll enjoy doing includes:
* Support and guide families of youth with visual disabilities.
* Develop, implement, and evaluate resources, workshops, and
activities for youth.
* Provide direct instruction and coaching to youth and their
support networks.
* Facilitate self-advocacy and peer mentorship activities for
youth and their support networks.
* Conduct age-appropriate career exploration activities for
children and youth with visual disabilities.
* Assist youth in developing skills and confidence in
household chores and family labor tasks.
* Create workshops and activities for youth support networks,
including efforts to increase self-advocacy, independence, and
problem-solving skills.
* Collect participant and stakeholder feedback for program
improvement and refinement.
* Collaborate with community businesses, educational entities,
the Department of Children, Youth and Families, partner agencies, and
Washington Sensory Disabilities Services to maintain effective
communication, coordination, and to track/report on youth progress and
program outcomes.
* Other duties as assigned.
