Microsoft Word - 

Sentence by Sentence

Imagine this. You are a new screen reader user and you have just recently learned our four main reading commands. You are reading the beginning of an unfamiliar document on Microsoft Word. Which reading command do you choose?

*     Character by character

*     Word by word

*     Line by line or

*     Paragraph by paragraph

Well, character by character and word by word are too small to read those concepts, and paragraph by paragraph could be too much information for you to start out with, so I tell my students to start out reading line by line. Great!

But there’s a problem with that. When reading line by line, where does the screen reader stop? At the end of the line. So, that means our new learner is reading with all of his sentences broken up, 

like this. Pretty annoy-

ing huh?

So what can we do? It takes a bit of time and practice to be able to understand sentences like that, but you can always use the sentence by sentence reading command.

First, disclaimer: This reading command ONLY works in Microsoft Word, so if you are in Google Docs or on the internet, line by line is all ya got...

Ok here’s the key command:

Next Sentence: Alt + Down Arrow

Previous Sentence: Alt + Up Arrow

Now, what’s the pattern that you can use to remember these commands?

Pattern: Read in the direction that makes sense.

Maryland Regional Braille Challenge

The 2023 Maryland Regional Braille Challenge is a competitive reading and writing competition at the Maryland School for the Blind! Braille Challenge is the only academic competition of its kind held in January through March each year for students who are blind or visually impaired. Braille Institute developed Braille Challenge to motivate students to practice and hone their braille literacy skills, which are essential to academic and employment success.
