KeyCode: How a braille-centric computer coding app can improve educational
and employment opportunities 

For several years, coding has been an overwhelming buzzword for many.
Students who are blind are often left out of this space and as a result,
cannot participate in what is becoming part of the curriculum.

There has been no convenient way to compile code for people living with a
visual impairment, making it challenging to learn, stay engaged and pursue a
career in computer programming. Until now!

"Being able to write and understand coding opens many doors for future
employment. From a technological standpoint, everything we touch contains
some form of code. With the endless possibilities that computer engineering
has to offer, by combining KeyCode and a micro:bit processor, we hope to
make a difference in improving the employability rate of people living with
visual impairment. We can now not only meet the needs of young coding
enthusiasts with the Code Jumper, but also give them the opportunity to
continue learning to code until they enter the workforce with the
Notetaker," says Andrew Flatres, Product Manager.

What is KeyCode? 

KeyCode is a computer programming application on the BrailleNote Touch Plus
that makes it easy to create, edit and compile Python projects with a
micro:bit.

Projects created in Python, which are often visual in nature, can be created
using sound, motion, and other methods of interaction with the micro:bit to
provide a student who is blind with an engaging approach to immediately put
Python coding concepts into practice.

In addition, coding for the micro:bit family of processors can be generated
and transferred to micro:bit hardware module, allowing you to validate your
projects using real hardware that can be used directly with the BrailleNote
Touch Plus.

What is the micro:bit processor? 

The micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer that can be coded, customized and
controlled to bring digital ideas, games and apps to life. It has a sound
sensing, and playback capabilities to allow for interaction with you and
your world. The micro:bit can be directly programmed using KeyCode and can
be used to control other accessories such as cars and robots (micro:bit
hardware is not included).

What resources are available? 

The purpose of KeyCode is not to teach Python or coding concepts, but to
provide tools for learning in a braille-first and highly accessible fashion.
For more information on coding, visit MicroBit.org. To help you get started
with KeyCode, we've included some projects that work with micro:bit in the
HW Buddy app downloadable from Play Store and Apple Store.

This version includes enhancements, localization, and fixes that came
directly from BrailleNote Touch Plus users. We appreciate all those who
write to us with suggestions or bug reports, which helps us to continue
improving the world's first Google-certified Braille tablet.

When connected to the internet, BrailleNote Touch Plus users will see a
notification that a system update is available. When the notification
appears simply press a cursor router key, and the download will begin
immediately.

If the notification has not appeared, please follow these steps:

1. From the Main Menu, press A to jump to All applications.

2. Then press Enter to select All Applications.

3. Press the letter K until you are prompted with KeyUpdater.

4. Press Enter to select KeyUpdater

5. Press Enter to select Application update.

Please note, this update is only available for the BrailleNote Touch Plus.
